Chinese takeaways

Chinese food is the worst variety of takeaway available. Would happily never have one again if it was my choice.

There’s one I know of it the north east where the head chef is a big fat f***ing geordie and the owners just pick and choose when they want to close totally disregarding what their advertised opening hours are. The bloke who answers the phones and delivers is a dick aswell, called joe I think.

 friggin hell so much exaggeration and hate. We will never meet mate so there's no need to dislike me that much.

I order from my nearest restaurant. Started delivering couplemof year ago. Perfect

I can’t use a traditional takeaway now as they just don’t match up.....

Are there any decent ones around? And what do you get?

I've never had a decent chinese takeaway ever. Yet I can go to a chinese restaurant and really like it. Why such a disparity between restaurants and takeaways? Other types of food while some places can be crap you can generally always find something good - Indian or Italian etc.

I only ever had chinese takeaway when I was younger and spent years avoiding restaurants as thought I just didn't like chinese food until a friend took me to a place on stowell st in Newcastle. Have since been to a few in UK and Aus and quite like it.

But still cannot stand the takeaway variety. Just got some tonight and it was all f***ing vile apart from the salt and pepper chips. And there was about as much nutritional value as a brick.

Bag of shite.
The traditional UK Chinese takeaways tends to specialise in the Cantonese style of cooking. However if you go to a restaurant you may find that the chef uses the Beijing or "Pekingese" style of cooking. The other Chinese style that I am familiar with is Sichuan which is also excellent.

The latter two are in my opinion far superior to Cantonese cooking however it is the case that" foreign" cooking is often modified to suit local tastes. For instance Chop Suey is not an authentic Chinese meal and was invented in the USA so Cantonese takaways and are likely to have been highly modified for the locals.

Its also the reason why there is no such thing as a "curry" in Indian cooking and Tikka Masala and Balti are inventions of the UK Indian Punjabi "curry houses" and not authentic Indian cuisine. South Indian cuisine on the other hand is more often than not vegetarian featuring things like the more authentic Masala Dosa and vegetable Tali.

I use a chinese takeaway in Jesmond called Eastern Meadow and have found they are the nearest to restaurant quality I've found. Agree though a whole lot of them are very poor these days.

Also there's a chinese restaurant down Hylton Road which is very good that do takeout.

My son works in our local Chinese takeaway - they're Cantonese (Hong Kong). A lot of what they serve is bastardised to suit what we expect - but the owner will make up authentic dishes if you ask. It has to be eaten fresh though - we're lucky - it's only 5 minutes from the house.

GMTS or GFY
Used to live maxims when henry and Lisa (their English names)!!

David in gmts is my go to Chinese. Not so keen on fountain gardens. Not been in happy valley since the 80’s

Ocean pearl in shields is bang average.
It used to be the best in Shields, after the Long River closed down but I've only been in once since I moved to Scotland so I'm not in a position to comment
The Sea View is another matter. - that's much better than it ever used to be - if I'm ever in Shields for an overnight these days it's a must
