Charlton having more fans than us

I'm proud of our following tomorrow. People will have worked hard and some will have made a lot of sacrifices for the 2 Wembley trips. Some will only have afforded one. The fans have been unbelievable all season and are the best thing about our club.
Noise wise we could have been better last time at the game though. The combination of a more low key night and a later kick off time should tale care of that.

Personally, think it's a poor show from Charlton Athletic fans - if only because they like to see themselves as a sleeping giant, just because they had a huge grass bank allowing them to get 60,000-75,000 when they played the likes of Arsenal.

Back when London had huge working class communities, all London clubs could get big crowds. Millwall used to get 30-45,000 in the Second and Third Division (South) between the wars when the Millwall and Surrey docks were at their peak.

When Millwall sold 47,349 for the Auto-Windscreens Shield v Wigan Athletic in 1999 it was a reflection of that past. It was Millwall first official visit to Wembley (we had made a War time FA Cup final) and everyone connected with the club and area went.

Same when Millwall sold 49,661 for the League One Play-Off Final - our first visit to the new Wembley and our first ever Play-Off Final match.

Both of those attendances are a record for one club at both the old and new Wembley BTW - lucky we played clubs that sent back so many tickets!

So, I'm actually surprised that Charlton took until Thursday to sell 39,000 tickets - given their belief they are a 'sleeping giant' and certainly far bigger than Millwall. Especially as it's their first visit to the new Wembley, their first Play-Off Final in 21 years and against Sunderland, a huge club at L1 level.

As said, Sunderland selling 40,000 for a mickey mouse cup and then nearly the same for a L1 playoff is immense. London clubs are never tested in that way. We played you lot at Old Trafford for a FA Cup Semi-Final. You could only buy a ticket if you were a member of the Millwall Supporters' Club - 24,000 people signed up and therefore we had an empty upper tier. That's probably a fair reflection of our 'true' active support if you like. But, if we had to play a L1 Play-Off Final a month or two later at Old Trafford after that Semi-Final I reckon we would have taken about 18-20,000.

The people of Sunderland support their club superbly and you should be very proud IMO.

Quite a lot of truth in this post, apart from one hugely significant fact, not one Charlton fan thinks that we are a sleeping giant that I know of.

We ain't a little club for sure and the history of the club with family connections will always help when/if we ever get back on our feet. We are acutely aware that we are not an Arsenal but we can be a Leicester type club by selling out regularly and keeping our heads above the water. At least we have the potential.

We cannot command the loyalty from fans the likes of Newcastle or Sunderland can as there are simply far too many options close by if we fall short for those less committed fans.

It's been particularly difficult of late, having an owner who openly tells us that his business plan has no interest in winning matches and he simply sees the club as a means of making money by selling our best talent to clubs in higher leagues. Added to this, the twat thinks that he knows/knew more about football, the players, tactics and formations than our managers, it's not really surprising that many of us have felt disinclined to give the scrote our hard earned for his project.

I'm more surprised at the size of our turn out rather than yours for this match. I guess that we are simply desperate to just enjoy our football once again, whereas you are possibly less enthusiastic having been so well placed for automatic promotion.

Of course we also will have fonder memories of 98 than you will have.

Don't beat yourselves up, your ticket sales are superb by any standard.

It looks like we might be setting a record for a League 1 play off final, that's not something to be sneezed at.

I wouldn’t be worried if that was the case. We’d be around the top of most competitions

Albanians are more interested in Scottish football so I don’t believe they would want to buy us!

I didn't expect a Millwall fan is commenting on a Sunderland Charlton match. Still, my comments stand.
I know there were non Charlton supporting mates in our end in 98 as has been pointed out, just as I know the Millwall ticket sales were boosted for their trio's to Wembley in the same way.
For 2019, we have a much bigger residual fan base than we did in 98 and the 'support' of other club's fans is far less significant this time.
I went to the fa cup final replay of Spurs to support QPR in 1982 as I figured that tickets were going to be pretty easy to get without all the prawn sandwich brigade turning up and I had resigned myself to never seeing Charlton at Wembley.
This type of support also explains why Millwall, with small average attendances, got such huge ticket sales, genuine football fans who can't get tickets for big occasions for their own club, either because there arent any big occasions or not enough tickets, will jump at the chance for a great day out.

Charlton are the bigger club hence larger allocation.

People should only highlight numbers when we have more than the opposition. It should be conveniently ignored otherwise.......
