Charlton having more fans than us

The fascination with attendances these days is bordering insanity. It was never like this when I was a kid, no one gave a toss.
We live in a time where people take photos of an away end and discuss if it looks class or not, it’s just a group of people standing or sitting at a football match ffs  that before I even get on about the bellends that video everything at the football now and presumably miss everything as a result.

I would be worried if it was a competition where the winners would be the ones with most fans attending. However, the winners will be determined by who scores the most goals. Haway the lads and lasses, wherever you are watching the game, raise the roof.
Nee body can hear you unless u are there!

Louder, I hope so, against Pompey we were still hungover and quiet
Cannot wait marra!

Personally, think it's a poor show from Charlton Athletic fans - if only because they like to see themselves as a sleeping giant, just because they had a huge grass bank allowing them to get 60,000-75,000 when they played the likes of Arsenal.

Back when London had huge working class communities, all London clubs could get big crowds. Millwall used to get 30-45,000 in the Second and Third Division (South) between the wars when the Millwall and Surrey docks were at their peak.

When Millwall sold 47,349 for the Auto-Windscreens Shield v Wigan Athletic in 1999 it was a reflection of that past. It was Millwall first official visit to Wembley (we had made a War time FA Cup final) and everyone connected with the club and area went.

Same when Millwall sold 49,661 for the League One Play-Off Final - our first visit to the new Wembley and our first ever Play-Off Final match.

Both of those attendances are a record for one club at both the old and new Wembley BTW - lucky we played clubs that sent back so many tickets!

So, I'm actually surprised that Charlton took until Thursday to sell 39,000 tickets - given their belief they are a 'sleeping giant' and certainly far bigger than Millwall. Especially as it's their first visit to the new Wembley, their first Play-Off Final in 21 years and against Sunderland, a huge club at L1 level.

As said, Sunderland selling 40,000 for a mickey mouse cup and then nearly the same for a L1 playoff is immense. London clubs are never tested in that way. We played you lot at Old Trafford for a FA Cup Semi-Final. You could only buy a ticket if you were a member of the Millwall Supporters' Club - 24,000 people signed up and therefore we had an empty upper tier. That's probably a fair reflection of our 'true' active support if you like. But, if we had to play a L1 Play-Off Final a month or two later at Old Trafford after that Semi-Final I reckon we would have taken about 18-20,000.

The people of Sunderland support their club superbly and you should be very proud IMO.

The OP is a known mag. Don’t rise to it...just laugh at him being obsessed with another trip to Wembley for SAFC

Just to put Mr Millwall straight we sold out Tuesday and Wembley came up with more tickets. The rest of it , well if want to believe all that pony it's upto you. You only have to look at the history books , they have always been in our shadow attendance wise

38plus compared to our 35k plus

Think it’s first time in my 6 visits to Wembley we have taken less than the opposition

Understand the reason, watering the garden, shopping, x 2 trips to Wembley in the space of 3 months.....

But we can still do this

Some of the Charlton seats are undoubtedly our supporters that panicked and thought they’d get shutout in Phases 1 and 2 had their Charlton friends buy for them.

We have great support

We've had more fans at Wembley than man city in our respective two visits apparently( sorry if seb)

I’m proud of our big following, but the argument that it gives us any real advantage is weakening year on year for me.

Actually, there is a comparison between Millwall and Charlton attendances from 1920 that actually show when at the same level, Millwall have averaged more on more occasions than Charlton! I will try and find it. Although you can verify that using or yourself, if you are that bothered.

Most people do not realise how well Millwall were supported between the wars and just after - when the Millwall Docks and Surrey Docks were at their peak. For example 38,501 v Swindon in Division Three (South) 1937-38, for a non promotion/relegation game. Or 31,990 v Port Vale for our first Third Division Three (South) match after a miserable relegation from Division Two in 1948/49 and the even more impressive 45,642 for the visit of 4th placed Notts County to The Den in October 1948/49 with the Lions in 6th (only one promotion place back then) in Division Three (South). Sadly, the club has just never experienced any sustained success, ever. As the docks started to decline, so did the support, as many had to move away to find new work. However, there is a bigger floating support for Millwall than you may think. When Millwall were forced to introduce a members only policy for games 24,000 people did sign up. To become a member you needed to hand over personal details, supported by bank or utility bills, a passport picture and a fiver. So, not for the casual fan.

I would also wager that there is no way Charlton could sell the 49,661 tickets Millwall managed to sell (plus the c2,000 Club Wembley seats) if they were also playing Scunthorpe United Sunday like we did in 2009, instead of the more attractive Sunderland. I think those Charlton fans that really know their club would agree, reluctantly, but agree nevertheless.

Anyways, this isn't really a debate for a Sunderland forum. I was more interested in saying the people of Sunderland support their team brilliantly and should never be anything but proud of that fact!

I hope both sets of fans have a great day. Win win for us Millwall fans... we get the most one-sided derby series in English football back (in our favour) and I think a candidate for one of the relegation places (given the Charlton owner) if Charlton win. But, if Sunderland win it will be quite amusing to see so many Addicks disappointed in one place and it not involving missing the passing of the Flying Scotsman and Sunderland always bring a great & vocal following to The Den and make it a top match.

I will leave you both to it now. As probably out-staying welcome!

You have a few good points , I know back in the day people would go to the Den one week and The Valley the next. As you say a Sunderland forum not the place to have the debate.
