Charlie Methven on metro radio

He's starting to come across a right bellend.

The fans need to be realistic because we say a club Sunderland's size shouldn't be in league 1? Him and Stewart have been saying that all season.
They are deliberately dumbing down expectations and got a lot of fans on here on board with some trite "taking back our club" guff .

He is right regarding the noise our fans made. I was row 38 in 110 and only about 10 rows made the effort to sing. I was quite surprised at how flat our support was even at 1-0 up.

We really need to build on the flags effort with some ideas for building noise and organising ourselves. Make the Roker End the whole of the South stand and move the family zone. It's stupid having the singing end (which often contains songs involving swearing) near to where bairns sit

Good interview
Spoke from the heart. Spoke truthfully.
Dont think he said Charlton are as big as us, but that they also deserve more than league one too as are a big club, which they are tbh.
Better than wishy washy interviews you sometimes get
Its not a good interview at all. It's an interview that will get the backs up of the clubs support. In that interview hes doing the absolute opposite of what he should be doing.

He can stick his pints up his arse if he thinks the fans should take any of the blame for being too quiet or not believing we would do it. And the dig about charlton taking more fans, were not all made of money Charlie boy and the fans have spent more than the club deserve this season.

Like I said, he's tactless. I see it in certain people all the time. Getting irate about it doesn't do the person getting irate any good, and doesn't change anything. The response to anyone who dares to suggest that we anything other than paragons of support, be it Methven or anyone else, is extreme hostility. The mildest criticism results in a barrage of "fans' fault" comments. My response to criticism tends to be along the lines of "I'll show you". That looks like it puts me in a minority. The comment about the attendance on Sunday was ill-judged, to put it mildly;one of the dangers of a live interview. It's totally masking that most of what he said was spot on.
Don’t get mad get even has been my approach and it’s served me well.

Chicken and egg....Perhaps if the supporters werent wailing like fannies at every misplaced pass and got behind the team for 90 mins then some of those draws would have been wins....Problem is many of our fans go in with the attitude that they pay their money so have a right to abuse the players.....Aye you do but dont then complain when players then struggle with confidence.

Abuse the players? Your unravelling here mind.

His judgement of the game was spot on. But a blind man on a galloping horse would get that judgement right of Sunday.

His response to the question about a club of our size being in this division was worse than tactless; and he’s meant to be a PR expert. He said supporters need to get real and then started making comparison with us and Charlton on the day which were never asked about. I’ve said it before on this thread, he was the one who was banging on about club size and saying we were bigger than Newcastle etc at the start of the season, yet when this club size was mentioned he got instantly defensive and turned it into something about the support base. It was piss poor, unwarranted and completely irrelevant

Yes we were gifted a lead then Leadbitter has a decent shot. I can’t remember us creating anything else all game.

Even though it was 1-1 at half time all the talk in the concourse was about how we hadn’t turned up.

It seemed to me that Ross had concentrated so much on nullifying Charlton’s strengths (Taylor primarily, which we managed to do) that he failed to maximise our own.

Maguire was barely involved and got nowhere near Wyke. Neither fullback made telling contributions in an attacking sense and our midfield were sat too deep for most of the game.

It’s like a chicken and egg scenario this whole ‘do the fans inspire the team or vice versa’ but I know if we’d been pressing quicker, winning tackles and creating chances the noise would have been far greater.

If fans watch a side playing one paced passive football without creating chances in a game which is win or bust the chances are there’s very little to ignite their enthusiasm.

 ah well then. Why bother eh?

It was a damn sight better than ours man, so what does that say about us?

That we've seen God knows how many leads thrown away with insipid performances? They really weren't massively loud. As I say, they were right next to me and the drum was what you could hear most.
Did their "rocking" atmosphere prevent them from f***ing up within 5 minutes? Did it help get them back in the game or did our rabbit in the headlights act once again become the main factor?

He can fuck right off for me now like. f***ing ridiculous to blame the fans after they’ve stepped up for everything he’s asked of them this season. The team doesn’t match the fans’ dedication, that’s where the blame should lie.

Fans fault we drew 19 times according to muffin man

People state that if the team give us something to shout about the atmosphere would be great. Thing is we are often leading and the atmosphere is still shite and actually gets tense with people having a pop at players for every missed pass.........We know it happens, even when we are winning and doing well the managers and players will tell you its a demanding place to play football......But hey, thanks for proving the point that you like to chuck out the criticism to everyone in the club but cant handle even the mildest criticism of the fans.

He should simply have stopped at saying that our size doesn't bring a right to be promoted with it. I doubt anyone would disagree with that.

Exactly. An absolute fuck-up after breaking all attendance records and he comes out with this? Aye, the season ticket sales will be flying now bonny lad

Didnt step up for the play off semi, the attendance was cringeworthy.

Cringeworthy to whom? I wasn't cringing.

We think we're the best fans around, but, by God, some of us are certainly the most thin-skinned. He's right in a lot of what he says; our size is immaterial if we don't perform on the day. His comments about the attendance were tactless, but that's far from an uncommon trait. Rather than throwing a hissy fit, isn't the best response to prove him wrong?
Out of top 10 things that need fixing at SAFC the fans are nowhere near. Beggars belief.

Sunderland is renowned for having people loaded with cash who have the ability to travel to London like.

If Wembley stadium was less than an hour on the metro away I’ve no doubt we’d have sold our allocation out.

Poor to have a go at the fans like.
