Charlie Methven on metro radio

Our fans were quiet and seemingly hungover from the Trafalgar party. Charlton were only louder when singing Allez Allez Allez which in itself is pathetic.

The lower attendance is a direct result of being there for Checkatrade and the way we limped in at the end of the season

It had their end rocking in a way ours just never does. Sorry like, what is pathetic is churning out the same shite lifeless songs every week. For our numbers the atmosphere we create really isnt great.

Our end of the ground was electric until we were gifted a goal. Paradoxically we then got nervous and this got worse as the team sat back. Inevitably conceding. The build up was electric. Die hard fans are realists too - plenty of Wembley defeats suffered. For Charlton - a day out and no pressure really.

Sunderland fans were generally pathetic at Wembley and that's the truth. I use that particular word deliberately.
It was by far the worst performance by our fans at a big game in my lifetime and I'm 46.

I know, another pop at the fans .

And I'm not having that it's because we were poor on the pitch. Many fans mentally gave up weeks before the end of the season.

But keep on banging on about 46k on Boxing Day and you will feel happy with yourselves.

FWIW no way he doesn't run them comments by Donald before opening his gob

I don’t think he does run them by Donald as he then has to shovel the shit left behind.

Donald always comes across like a reasonable bloke. Methven comes across like a typical old Etonian; bullish, supremely confident but not half as clever as he thinks he is. He’ll be found out here eventually.

Where does the lack of belief come from? How many insipid draws after taking the lead?

Chicken and egg....Perhaps if the supporters werent wailing like fannies at every misplaced pass and got behind the team for 90 mins then some of those draws would have been wins....Problem is many of our fans go in with the attitude that they pay their money so have a right to abuse the players.....Aye you do but dont then complain when players then struggle with confidence.

Prove Charlie Methven wrong? What does any Sunderland supporter have to prove to him? He’s been at the club for five minutes and he’s labelled people parasites and now had a pop at only taking 34k to a match 300 miles away. Not one single supporter has to prove one single thing to him.

Like I said, he's tactless. I see it in certain people all the time. Getting irate about it doesn't do the person getting irate any good, and doesn't change anything. The response to anyone who dares to suggest that we anything other than paragons of support, be it Methven or anyone else, is extreme hostility. The mildest criticism results in a barrage of "fans' fault" comments. My response to criticism tends to be along the lines of "I'll show you". That looks like it puts me in a minority. The comment about the attendance on Sunday was ill-judged, to put it mildly;one of the dangers of a live interview. It's totally masking that most of what he said was spot on.

So it isn't chicken and egg, you're blaming the fans.

You have to be taking the f***ing piss.

Apologies if SEB, haven't seen anything about it. Bit of an odd interview like, suggesting Charlton are as big a club as us (seemingly specifically because they had more fans at Wembley and entirely ignoring the fact they had low attendances at the start of the season so effectively just had a lot of day trippers). Also mentioning the fans being quiet (can't really argue, although I'd argue that the football served up didn't exactly help). He divides opinion a bit so will be interesting to see how this one goes down
Fans fault. An absolutely ridiculous comment about the comparative size of the clubs. He's going to get people turning on him with comments like that.

I know, too many people precious as fuck and cant handle being told the truth. Always everybody elses fault, never their own.

Do you not think he might have been better not bringing the fans into it? He's asked whether SAFC are too big to be in this league (something he has mentioned himself previously), would he not have been better served just mentioning there's no automatic right to go up and that we need to improve over the summer if we want promotion? That would have been absolutely fair enough as a response to that question, and would have acknowledged that there have been failings throughout the club which have prevented us going up which we can work on. Instead mentioning the support (who were there in big numbers, spending a fortune again) just seems highly ill advised and a bit unnecessary.

There's definitely an argument that, although impressive in numbers, the fans have been fairly quiet at times this season, but I don't think it had any impact on us not beating Charlton, nor do I think it was the reason we weren't able to get automatic promotion ahead of a side who had finished second in league two the season before. I'm not offended by it or owt, I was there, I sang most of the game in 113 behind the goal, just think it seems pointless because it's bound to get people's backs up

we were 1-0 up in a final. The place should have been rocking.

Yes we were gifted a lead then Leadbitter has a decent shot. I can’t remember us creating anything else all game.

Even though it was 1-1 at half time all the talk in the concourse was about how we hadn’t turned up.

It seemed to me that Ross had concentrated so much on nullifying Charlton’s strengths (Taylor primarily, which we managed to do) that he failed to maximise our own.

Maguire was barely involved and got nowhere near Wyke. Neither fullback made telling contributions in an attacking sense and our midfield were sat too deep for most of the game.

It’s like a chicken and egg scenario this whole ‘do the fans inspire the team or vice versa’ but I know if we’d been pressing quicker, winning tackles and creating chances the noise would have been far greater.

If fans watch a side playing one paced passive football without creating chances in a game which is win or bust the chances are there’s very little to ignite their enthusiasm.
