Aye it looks like Trevaskis is going down the same road as Pringle. His progress seems to have just stalled for some reason. Whitehead looked promising in the T20 and he’s been released as well. Don’t seem to be able to develop spinners.

Don't think trevaskis or whitehead have been given much opportunity to develop, both looked handy in the blast, but unless they can bat in the top order we are not going to pick them ahead of a
seamer allrounder in the 4 day stuff as more likely than not they won't get much of a bowl. I think Pringle would still have been a good squad player to have aswel when the time came to play a spinner

tricky, as he'd have to be a good enough bat to get in on that alone, and just be used when we're behind on over rate, or want to crack a partnership, or on the rare occasion it's ragging square. borthwick is a good enough bat to allow that. blackwell was. the likes of collingwood, jennings etc also with their medium pace. pringle was in that grey area, like burnham is now, like richardson, clark, harte etc where they're kind of ok but not quite good enough to be confident in them

i'd say it's huge progress from where we were recently to go to the county champion and get into such a winnable position. a loss takes all the gloss off, but it was a great bowling display first innings, a great knock by borthwick, a fifty for poynter hopefully gives him some confidence... there were certainly some positives to take

Agree 100%. We were one of the worst teams in the Second Division in 2018. In 2019 had our worst ever start to a CC Season when defeated in the first 4 games but came back and had an outside chance of promotion. Season 2020 was difficult to judge as the season was shortened and the CC format altered. Which brings us up to today when we should have beaten the current CC champions. This is excellent progress from where we were a mere couple of seasons ago. The Essex commentators often mentioned that it was very rare to see such a tight game at Chelmsford. Normally Essex bat first, rack up a big score and then bowl the opposition out. But this game they had to graft for their victory.

Blaming the climate for lack of spinners is a cop out. Durham is sheltered from the prevailing weather by the Cumbrian fells and has less rainfall than Lancs and Somerset who have no problems developing spinners. We had an outstanding young spinner on our books and he was persuaded to focus on becoming a top order batsman. If he was at Somerset or Northants, he'd still be a bowler or a number six allrounder.

The facts are we have never developed a quality spinner despite having some decent kids to work with. The best spinner we've had was bought in (Breece) and he had no problems taking wickets at the Riverside.

Trevaskis was good in the RLC as well but can't get a game in the cc side. They've brought in this Alex Thomson on loan which must make him feel the coaches don't fancy him and his days are numbered at the club.

So the reason we don't develop spinners is we are stuck in a rut of developing seamers and preparing wickets to suit them?

Iirc it was Paul Collingwood who persuaded Borthwick to focus on his batting. Its understandable as he wasn't progressing and is a good batsman but that never would have happened at Somerset, Essex or Northants. Around the time he played for England, several pundits were saying he needed to move away from Durham to progress as a spinner.

Tbf that first innings seam howling performance is as good as you will see, but was aided by the weather conditions. When the sun came out we were stuck for ideas. We need a more rounded team if we are going to progress.

Its a much better side than previous seasons mainly because they've shored up the batting. When Bancroft arrives, we'll have Lees, Bancroft, Borthwick and Bedingham top four which is pretty strong. The trouble is each of them has a propensity to chuck their wickets away to a waft at the new ball. We need to learn how to dig in.

Seam attack is pretty steady as well but we are lacking depth and variety to the bowling. I think Eckersley, Burnham and Poynter should be competing for two places and we need to sign a decent all-rounder, preferably off-spinner or left armer.
