CC :: Essex v Durham

I go into every game hoping that Durham will win and certainly expected them to win after bowling Essex out for 96. They're clearly weak in areas as I've already pointed out. I like to temper my optimism with realism.
I like to temper pessimism with realism  I get from that position you'd expect to win but looking at the bigger picture I think we're a long way from getting bowled out twice in an afternoon Vs Leicestershire and I'm pleased with that. Obviously if results don't follow it's all for nought

Burnham. Both the hero and villain of the hour. Only he could manage to achieve that. Got ourselves into winning positions but could not capitalise on them. Couldn’t polish off their tail in the second innings and got off to a disastrous start with the bat in our second innings. Just shows we are still weak in some areas. Could maybe do with a class spinning all rounder. However I am convinced that we have improved on the last couple of seasons but there is still work to do.

Any names in mind? Axar Patel was brilliant for us, but couldn't play him and Bancroft.

Borthwick is supposed to be a good spinning all-rounder. Pity he never brings himself on until the game has drifted.

Unfortunately I don’t have anybody in mind. I don’t know where Borthwick is in regards to his bowling. From what I can gather he didn’t bowl much at Surrey and may lack match practice. I think so far he has underbowled himself but maybe there is a reason for this. He does bowl a lot of loose stuff but that’s often the way with leggies.

Letting Pringle go was a bizarre decision in hindsight. Trevaskis hasn't looked like breaking into the four day team and Pringle could bat as well as bowl. Scored a ton for Burnmoor yesterday!

His record is abysmal
It’s not tho. It’s actually quite close to Ashley Giles’ test record. And he wasn’t an abysmal test cricketer. And he played some matches on turning tracks overseas

His first class bowling record is also extremely close to Mooen, a man who is a handy test spinner. Modern is obviously a much better bat

His record with the ball is also not that far off Rashid in red ball cricket

He’s limited of course. But he’s not abysmal

And his batting?

Aye it looks like Trevaskis is going down the same road as Pringle. His progress seems to have just stalled for some reason. Whitehead looked promising in the T20 and he’s been released as well. Don’t seem to be able to develop spinners.

Cook looks a dangerous bowler, I'd rank him at Rushworth quality.

Not knowing how to play spin is embarrassing though. We need to sort that out as the wickets will play dry this year due to the dry spring. Harmer is going to get a bucket of wickets
I'd agree but a lot of players don't play spin very well, not just these Durham players (just looks at the wickets Leach and Bess have taken over the past few years). The fact is the scheduling of CC to the arse ends of the summer do not help. I'm not the first to say that and nor will I be the last.

Essex has the driest climate in the UK and no doubt the NE climate has helped Durham/Yorks produce seam/swing bowlers.

it's a vicious circle tbh as england is not conducive to spin, especially durham, so we don't produce/use spinners much, so our players don't face it in the nets as much meaning our batters* don't learn to play it as well

*just getting ready for cricinfo terminology

This. It’s the same reason why we used to ask for the fixture secretary to have us playing away from home in the first week of the season - it’s always a bit colder and wetter up here for longer into the start of the season than it is in places like Essex, Sussex, Somerset, etc and therefore wicket preparation for our ground staff is usually a couple of weeks behind the southern counties.

Looking back through our history, the only real top spinners we’ve had have been from elsewhere (Blackwell - Somerset, Graveney - Middlesex, Breese - overseas). I don’t see the problem easing anytime soon, I just hope we produce a pitch for Essex’s visit that doesn’t turn for the entire four days.

Unfortunately apart from the first hour of play yesterday I have not seen any of the last two days play but I will make this observation.
When you decide to use your allocation of overseas pros on two specialist batsmen and also sign one of the steadier domestic batsmen on the county circuit you should be able to chase 168 in the 4th innings of a county match.

simplistic but it's hard to disagree.

i'd say where we lost it realistically is letting their tail add too many runs, but yes 168 should have been chasable, even on a day 4 pitch against one of the better if not best spinners in county cricket. still, they're champions for a reason, while we're a 2nd div side just beginning to find our feet as a team who can compete.

Par for the course for Durham, in a winable position yet still manage to lose.

i'd say it's huge progress from where we were recently to go to the county champion and get into such a winnable position. a loss takes all the gloss off, but it was a great bowling display first innings, a great knock by borthwick, a fifty for poynter hopefully gives him some confidence... there were certainly some positives to take
