CC :: Durham v Derbyshire

Fantastic day for us that, Burnham’s injury aside. Followed the same trends as the last two games, hope of course for a different outcome.

Having watched pretty much every ball on the stream, I have to say I was baffled by Derbyshire’s tactics with regards their bowling attack. Conners and Reece looked dangerous, the change bowlers of Aitchison and Hudson-Prentice didn’t so much, but to pick a kid in Scrimshaw and leave him until the last over before lunch (or so) didn’t make any sense. Nor did them barely bowling him all day when to me, he appeared a much more likely wicket taking threat than everyone bar Conners.

They bowled 33 overs of spin on a day where the ball didn’t turn at all and the much heralded Critchley fed our lads runs all day. He didn’t deserve his wicket, but even when it came he’d somewhat ‘bought’ it. Of those 33 overs, they basically decided from Tea until the new ball (16 overs) they weren’t giving any quick bowler a go. If I was a Derbyshire fan I’d be fuming at the tactics. For long periods of today it seemed like they weren’t even trying to take wickets.

Well I’m stupid then.

I also assumed it was a 'south African play for England' joke 😂

Godleman is their usual captain isn't he? I'm sure on comms that said it was the first game he'd missed since something absurd like 2016 (which sounds ludicrous now I think about it) so possibly their captain is pretty inexperienced

Another glorious batting day.
Weekend is going to be the same. Be a challenge to get a result.
.
David Bedingham is now topping the batting aggregates (and average) for this season. Burnham next Durham player at 32, Eckersley at 35.

Wayne Madsen is captain -very experienced and normally a shrewd operator.

As mentioned above, Madsen has taken charge in this game and was their captain before Godleman took it off him.

Reading the cricinfo report of Day 1, the writer (David Hopps iirc) suggested they’ve got a young and inexperienced bowling seam attack, which they have when you look at the stats, but they’ve performed reasonably well so far this season and on reflection I just felt they were very underused yesterday - certainly in the case of Aitchison, H-P and Scrimshaw who only got two spells apiece on a Day 1 pitch..... 🤷‍♂️
