It's a grey area. Legally if you have your mot that's valid nothing can change it. Even the authorities can't cancel an MOT.

If it’s a Major then it’s illegal to be driven but your MOT is still valid.

Yes, I have ‘free’ mots at the main dealer where it is booked in this week, but they want to charge me £550 for 2 new brake pads and disc ..... have found an independent who will do the same for about half the price so will probs book with them

Your insurers will ask if you have a valid mot certificate in the event of an accident. However from a moral point of view you need to get a major sorted asap.

Yes you can. We had similar a few years ago and the garage deemed our car unroadworthy and wouldn’t allow us to drive it.
