Boro thread

I'll settle for being in premier league right now. Yep, some good stuff there but 20 odd years ago wasn't it?
It must feel like a long time ago now, there’s a beautiful Irony of Boro fans coming on our message board to tell us we’re not special or relevant to other clubs 😁 the Tranmere of the North East.

If i was a Boro fan I’d be throwing European football and a trophy win at us as well in their defence. I’d give anything to see either of those things with SAFC. But it’s one trophy in the entire history of the football club.

However, the idea that the clubs are a similar size is absolutely ridiculous. Fanbase, history and just about everything else is incomparable. The only reason Boro have even been competing at the top end of the championship in recent seasons is Steve Gibson. The accounts show, as clear as day, without him writing debts off the club would be in serious financial trouble. That’s not a model any business owner would follow if they weren’t just a fan of the football club. He’s a good owner in that respect, but it’s very unique. With most other owners, like Ellis Short, that gravy train dries up and it’s someone else’s mess to fix. What’s been shown now though, is whilst Gibson is keeping the financial worries at bay, he’s not been able to push the club on to mount a serious challenge. Whereas in the same time, we’ve spent 4 seasons in league one, the club has been almost insolvent at stages and only through excellent recruitment and a self sufficient mindset we’ve achieved promotion to the PL. That’s a bitter pill for a lot of Boro fans imo. Nobody would’ve ever believed we’d be back before Boro a few years ago.

Sunderland are a premier league football club in every aspect. You could see by how much of the country wanted us to win on Saturday everyone knows the size of the football club and where we should be.

We had financial meltdown, back to back relegations, spent our longest period ever outside of the top flight, which is 8 years. Boro have had 1 PL season in about 18 years, they aren't a bad club, but they're not like us.

Take away all the mud slinging here utopia for me would be having all three of us in the premier and with Leeds
It was great period for area when Boro had Robson, we had Reidy and the mags with Robson also
Area is better for it
As fixtures to look forward to they are always better than some of the alternatives like Bournemouths etc
They are in really tough situation as In football terms Gibson isn’t rich anymore is covering huge losses so they are relying on shrewd investment and management to get them up like we’ve had this season
It looks a crowded field the championship next year and they aren’t on the parachute payment wheel
Know few of them their fanbase are on borderline of turning toxic
Looks like Gibson has stuck with Carrick which broadly hasn’t gone down well

Boro are not relevant a few miles from the Riverside stadium. It's not a football crazy area like Tyne and Wear where the clubs are a religion. Tumbleweed club with no rivals and bitter clutching at straws on here. Why are they even here to begin with I'm from teesside and I'm not on fmtttttmtm or whatever it's called.

I can assure you Boro fans don’t want any medium of success for us and laughed at us when we went down to league 1. Personally I hope they sack Carrick & get Gordon Strachan back. He was doing a great job

I'm grateful I have seen my club lift a major trophy. I get the likes of Huddersfield, Preston and Sunderland fans wanting to remind people of league titles in the early 1900s. All good, I would do the same.
Sorry, but have to do my regular reminder that the league cup isn't a major trophy. Huge for fans of clubs like ours that win fuck all, but it's the secondary cup competition. Introduced purely as a money grab because clubs installed floodlights and wanted a tournament to use them in iirc. Loads of nations don't even bother with two cups. I am jealous of you seeing your side win a cup, don't get me wrong. I'm jealous of West ham too, and their cup wasn't a major one either. I would, of course, go mental if we ever won either of them

This is absolutely spot on.

But this is exactly wev's point.
These things you mention are all iconic - to you and other Sunderland fans.
Media saying you are back up 'where you belong' is just them playing up to things- doing their job.
You say your club is all these things nationally, yet your fans winge on about about referees being against you and the media conveniently forgetting about Moyes' tenure .

'Roar' ?
More known for the mass exodus isn't it ?
😜

Yep. Of course Sunderland fans think their club is different. Like every fan of their respective club.

It's fine, I get it, but it's an inconvenient truth. But it is that, the truth.

Wow.
You call Boro fans bitter!

For somebody that allegedly is born and bred on Teesside , you seem very bitter towards the place.

Does our league cup win not count then, because the final was held in Wales?
Or is that maybe a bit of straw clutching?

It counts. It's just a shite cup and it's been mentioned why three posts above yours.

Allegedly born in teesside. No I was born in North tees hospital unfortunately. Fortunately I have no mutant blood or dna tho.

I certainly wish we were in your position right now but the point I was making was that I'd have never experienced those things had I been a Sunderland supporter all my life.

Football is cyclical at the end of the day. I'm sure the time will come around again where we're both competing in the same division, or we're possibly in a division higher.

Fair enough.
Tough division next year mind for you although will be very interesting tbf. Literally 10 teams in mix to go up but you'd expect the relegated 3 to be favourites. Birmingham will be in there too. Could be a dark horse to win it. Coventry under Lampard are a threat.

Very tough for us obviously but with the parachute money if worst happens we'll be very strong to bounce back if we come straight back down.

10 teams and Boro not one of them

The year is 2078 and Boro have made their January run towards 5th, sadly they’ve then fell away for the 64th consecutive season. Club legend Hayden Hackney unveils his statue outside of the Riverside.
