Boro thread

Our fiirst double owa your lot since 61/62 when I knew we were gan up I was asked to eave the miners that night bloody worth it
As I said, not many reasons to be "in the moment" post 1973.

Your GK saving a penalty in the final minute of a game against a rival for a European place, meaning you qualify for Europe.

Seeing your club win a trophy.

Being 3 down on aggregate and coming back to win 4-3 in a European quarter-final

Being 3 down on aggregate and coming back to win 4-3 in a European semi-final

Now they're real reasons to be "in the moment". Maybe one day as a Sunderland fan you'll experience it.

Forest I might give you , due to Cloughie , their European Cup wins. They are deemed a “club” by the nation. They have a bit about them.

Hull ? No.

Their fans will believe that. Not you. That's my point. Every fan believes it's different for them, as they experience the highs and lows.

Every club has a story that is unique and makes their fan base think it's special and different for that club.

The neutral wax lyrical every year for one reason or another. Could be former PL champions Leicester next year winning the play off final and their fans will walk out thinking how unique and special they are.

Every fan thinks their club is special, you are no different - nobody else really notices.

From Samson the Cat, Elvis covers, Peter Reid, to netflix docuseries, bob stokoe, to cheesey chips see Roary the Lion, Steel River, Bryan Robson, Juninho documentaries on sky sports, Last minute wins in European semi finals and yes Parmos.

I'm sure Coventry fans think they are special because Keith Houchen scored a diving header once.

Every fan in the country thinks what you have just said. None of us really are, only to our own fan base
Roary the Lion and parmos....that's a joke right?

I thought Wilson taking the piss might come back to bite us mind.

But we broke them that night by the way. All wandering around Thorntree and Berwick hills the next day staring at the floor and muttering.

The autopsy appears to be still going on in the Gazette.

People in London and Manchester speak of little else when talking football clubs

What’s their iconic song ?
What’s their uplifting chant they have referenced on Cup final commentary by Brian Moore ?
What end of their ground is known for its Roar ?
Do they have a moment in football history like the Montgomery save ?

I can’t even remember who they beat when they won their Cup.
It’s not a football city. They had a one off little period. And clackers and crisps.

Who Leicester? Won the PL after nearly going down Leicester? Arguably the biggest underdog story in the history of English football? With a guy who they bought from non league up front? Or when they won the FA Cup? Or the 2 league cup wins in the 90s?

Anyway, you are missing my point - every club will think it is special. If it's Portsmouth singing play up pompey whist reminiscing about their FA Cup win in the 2000s or Stoke City singing Delilah whilst thinking nobody likes to play us on a Tuesday night.

Each clubs fan base think they are unique you are no different.

Wev you are sadly , insane.

Leicester - crisps
Portsmouth - the Mary Rose
Stoke - making plates and pots

Sunderland - the football club

I am going to bed now , weekend of Wembley victory took it out of me. Again.

Could be insane, but also completely correct.

Btw what is the Brian Moore commentary related/uplifting chant? I really don't have a clue. Maybe in 2025 only Sunderland supporters do? 🤔 (Sort of proves my point)

I think I’d just worry about your club staying in that league for a long time. Tougher league now. Boro regressing. Worrying times. Anyway, I hope you had a lovely day Saturday.

This is absolutely spot on.

But this is exactly wev's point.
These things you mention are all iconic - to you and other Sunderland fans.
Media saying you are back up 'where you belong' is just them playing up to things- doing their job.
You say your club is all these things nationally, yet your fans winge on about about referees being against you and the media conveniently forgetting about Moyes' tenure .

'Roar' ?
More known for the mass exodus isn't it ?
😜

This is the best post on here. When people from other parts of the country think of Sunderland they think of football.

I dont know what they think of about Boro, probably heavy industry…but the first thing in their mind won’t be Middlesbrough football club. Sunderland and football are entwined, more so than Newcastle even. The only other city in this country which is the same is Liverpool.

These smoggies going on about the uefa cup and getting to the final. Battered in the final sorry.

Pity the mutants couldn't get on board and actually attend the games. Poor Gibson saved them from dying, bought them Juninho and Co, won them a cup in Wales vs Bolton, first cup since they were formed which was before Sunderland. Built them the greatest squad in their history that got to a uefa final and they barely attend the games.

Leg 115 September 2005H
2–014,191

Group stage

3 November 2005H
12,953
15 December 2005H
9,436 ( I attended this one)

knockout phase

3 Leg 223 February 2006H
0–1
(2–2 )
24,018
4 Leg 19 March 2006H
1–025,534( I attended this one)
QF Leg 26 April 2006H
4–1
(4–3 )
24,521

But decided to sell out the semi final, great supporters. Greatest ever Boro team, uefa cup and couldn't be arsed previous games.
SF Leg 227 April 2006H
4–2
(4–3 )
34,622

I seen us in Europe, nah not many of you bothered.

Jealousy suits you, enjoy another mediocre season down where you belong.

I'll settle for being in premier league right now. Yep, some good stuff there but 20 odd years ago wasn't it?
