Edit.....Just checked. Hetton is 8 miles, so I have. Still makes no difference as to whether it's a derby or not though.

We're all just speaking about our own experiences, I don't hate Boro at all. There must be something though because we don't have these arguments about Rotherham or Hull.

I think we have lost our traditional rival to the Saudi state like, so we are basically the same as you now in that way.

I like Boro in that they are a northern working class town, they travel well, seem passionate.

Yeah it shocked me until I thought about it - Sunderland is one of our biggest games but there are other factors. You have boxing day games, end of season games, opening day games, quirky one off rivalry games that may get a big crowd. Then you have a Sunderland/Boro game that is nearly always on TV and the kick off time adjusted to prevent trouble.

But when you take all of that it into account and look closely, both clubs DO get a spike in their crowd when they play eachother. Take the latest game, 43.5k for a Sunday 12 o'clock game that's on TV. I don't see you getting that for a game against Hull at that time on TV.

Anyway, this has been done to death.

The point was most people in and around 10 miles of the sol, where the vast majority of fans are from, don't have a strong emotional connection with Boro. Simply because they don't interact with Boro fans, so they aren't getting the piss ripped at school/college/work etc if they lose. In this area there is no day to day banter between Sunderland/Boro fans. As a result of this there is no strong dislike that you would normally associate with a derby match.

It's acknowledged Old timers like yourself will have strong feelings against Boro because of the fierce battles you describe off the pitch in the 80s.

Sunderland fans who live in the very south of Durham/teesside are naturally more likely to dislike Boro also, because they will have regular interactions with Boro fans. This raises the stakes of the fixture. There is "bragging rights" to be had in Peterlee or Billingham that aren't in Southwick or Shiney Row. So when you keep asking me about the 10 mile thing, this is why, because I acknowledge it's different further south.

Some fans feel it should be labelled a derby simply because of the distance, regardless of the lack of emotion for the majority of fans in the fixture.

So in a nutshell going through this thread, to some its a derby, to some it isn't. It depends on what criteria you use.

I take your point, but we didn't have day to day interaction with them back then either.

I think what you are doing is taking the feelings of hatred and loathing we have for the Barcodes and using that as a benchmark for what a derby should feel like.

I agree, that NO fixture will ever get my feelings racing, or my emotions heightened more than a game against that lot. It transcends hatred in my mind.

Nothing will ever match that.

But simply because Boro don't get my heckles up like that, does not mean it loses its status as a North East derby marra.

I’ve never considered games against Boro as being Derbies.
Let’s say for example that neither us or Boro get out of the Championship in the next 20 years,could the games become derbies or can derbies for us only be against the mugs?
Extremely unlikely but if the Heed ended up in the same league as us and the mugs,would our games against the Heed become derby games,being our nearest opposition?

If Gateshead ended up in the championship i think it would be a sell out. By then they'd have a decent fanbase because of mags jumping on bandwagon.
 
There’s definitely a rivalry, without doubt, having said that I check the Boro results wanting them to get beat but not bothered really.
The Saudi lot I want to loose at everything, football, rugby, swimming, anything.
I’ve sat with the Boro fans at the riverside, but would never sit with them in St James.
