Of the 4 last season..

One was Boxing Day - which is a huge game in the calendar for 'walk up' fans. Nearly every club up and down the country sell much more tickets (than usual) for that fixture.
One was Luton in the play off semi final...
One was Stoke City at home (470 more tickets sold for that game compared to that of 'Boro (H))
One was Watford - final home game of the season, with a play off spot up for grabs.

And the only one this season was the opening game of the season - Ipswich at home...825 more tickets sold.

To remind you of what you said:

"History shows that the tickets sold for this game ramp up massively compared to any other league fixture (except Newcastle)."

'Any other league fixture', 'massively', not wishy washy talk of games being early or late in the season, or against giants like Stoke. We only got 825 less last season against PNE than Boro! Probably all in the away end as well.

Sky wasn't even a thing when we went to Ayresome Park in huge numbers back in the 70's and 80's intent on destruction. It's even a line in a song sung proudly in the Fulwell for donkeys years. "Off in the coach with the Boot Boys in it, we took Boro in half a minute"

You also seem to be an unelected/self imposed spokesperson for anyone living within 10 miles of the SOL, whatever the fuck that has got to do with owt.

You clearly never experienced that, and let me tell you marra, you missed a treat.

But just because it has been somewhat diluted over the years, and Sky is obviously your football experience, you personally cannot re invent what this fixture is.

Not "The" derby, but absolutely "A" derby.

Deal with it.

It's acknowledged that a minority do have interactions, perhaps you fit into this category. Mainly those that work/live in Boro or at the very south of county Durham. I can see why it feels more like a derby, because you'll have that banter, the anticipation going into the game, that heightened fear of losing.

Don't think it is wishy washy mind. But likewise for Boro. This is where the Sunderland game at the Riverside ranked in attendances since 2000.

2017/18 - 3rd highest crowd of the season
2016/17 - 11th
2008/09 - 8th
2007/08 - 4th
2005/06 - 7th
2002/03 - 7th
2001/02 - 9th

Considering it is apparently our biggest game it shows attendances don't tell the story.

Sounds like it was a cracking fixture. I understand the legacy of those battles will never die for those that experienced them. The interactions and experiences are what make a derby game and it sounds like you had some intense experiences in Boro to say the least.

I can't speak for all fans who live in and around Sunderland, but genuinely, most people I speak to just view it as another game. Boro travel well so there's normally a canny atmosphere.

I never said it was your biggest game. I was responding to someone saying attendances proved it was a "derby".

Do you limit our tickets compared to others. Surprised at those stats tbh. I’ve moved to boro and felt more hate over football than I did when I lived in Newcastle

Haha wouldn't put it past them. They're effectively owned by the Saudis now so don't know how that will impact the derby in the long run. It has lost its sporting merit. That's another can of worms.

I’m guessing he means because closer you are to the sol less likely you are to come across other boro fans. Newcastle is as intense a derby as it is because we’re constantly mixing. Never met another boro fan til I moved here. Never gave them a seconds thought but they f***ing hate us from what I’ve experienced

I haven't done a survey of every fan who lives close to Sunderland, so of course it is my opinion. The opinion is derived from living and working all my life in the area.

The reason I used 10 miles is because I've acknowledged that at the south end of Durham, there may be a mix of Sunderland and Boro fans in places.
