Without the context of what was happening we don't know, he could have been referring to anything. Either way I would hardly imagine a man who spent his career with black colleagues has all of a sudden become racist during middle age, he's just for a different generation where making jokes and taking the piss is how you tell people that you like and accept them.

Well, the other quotes cited and for which he hasn't denied kind of implies the context and that he knew what he meant. And it was never ok to call people those things, certain people just decided that it was.
@Sima what's the mags take on this? some interesting comments on the crayonicle's site.

A lot of Sunderland fans would act the same if it was one of ours, let's not kid ourselves.

When is he going to be banned from showing his face in public?

Great footballer, speaking has never been his strength and it seems like the limited vocabulary he has runs to racism quite readily.

There was a genuine attempt to sweep this under the carpet by NUFC and it's right they and him are being pilloried.

A ban of a few months tells us all we need to know about people who run the game.

That all comes back to what one person thinks is offensive and in the right context making a joke about things even racism, sexism all prejudice is absolutely fine because it breaks down the weird barrier's the permanently offended would love to keep up forever, it certainly would appear that he bullied lads over a long period of time.

Why wouldn't you say that? I mean I'm aware that black people were compared to monkeys as a slur but that's clearly not what I'm saying in that context.

You have to a be f***ing denser than osmium to not realise that calling a black person a monkey no matter how it's f***ing said won't be seen as monumentally racist. The context matters not a jot
then he has no place in the modern game

Or society

Of course it matters, unless you want to ban any word that used to be offensive, we probably won't have any words left to say like.

Beardsley is one of tynesides best looking men which tells you a lot about the state of the rest of the reptiles that live there.

Anyone hear Brazil talking about it this morning? Hadn't bothered to research the details but scoffed when the word 'bullying' was mentioned. Can only imagine what he was like as a 'mentor' to the younger lads in the dressing room.

Calling a black person no matter what the context a monkey is f***ing idiotic. Trying to make out because of that you can't use the word monkey is f***ing idiotic as well

Interesting that Craig Hope of the Daily Mail reckons Newcastle United knew about this in 2002 when a similar allegation was made and did nothing about it even supporting the not so good looking one.
He said that the F A pushed for these latest allegations to be dealt with and our Scum neighbours were happy to brush it under the carpet. Strong words indeed.
He also said he’d spent two years studying this case and it didn’t matter whether you were white or black or from Africa or Europe Beardsley would you treat you just the same....... badly.

Ashley’s fault.
