Australia v England, 3rd Test, 16th December , 23.30

41 degrees tomorrow, not good for Crawley, Pope and Brook brain fade potential
Decent day all things considered. Crucially we won’t be bowling all day with a tired attack in 40 degree weather tomorrow.

Flat pitch, shortish square boundaries, sun out, great opportunity to get a big score…cue the disappointment if it all goes to pot!
Careful now, Starc and Boland batted 27 overs together last test

It's quite funny that everyone predicted them batting all day for a few wickets, they are 8 down and still people complain.
This is exactly what I was thinking scrolling through the thread.

Admittedly I haven't seen a ball but just looking at the score on the scoreboard, I think I would have taken that at the start of the day.

Mixed feelings upon seeing the score at the close. I watched up until 1am, Aussies were around 60/2 and even though we had them 33/2, I thought we had bowled quite poorly. Carse was all over the place and whilst Archer was economical, he was unthreatening. Khawaja came to the crease at 33/2 with his career on the line and we barely made him play early in his innings.

That said, the pitch looks good, the conditions are favourable for batting so I think we have limited them quite well despite having them 94/4. It will go back to that old adage that you can't judge a pitch until both sides have batted on it, but we have put ourselves in a good position which could have been even better.

Far from ideal having Jacks bowl 20 overs on day one and his figures reflect that.

Finally, am I missing something with Cameron Green? I don't think I have ever seen him score more than 40 and he averages 1 wicket per test. Him coming in at 5 shows that this Australia batting line up is really quite weak.

It’s almost like in that old Aussie side rhey are desperate to have a young blood in there somewhere

He absolutely bottled it last game when he moved away from his stumps. The Aussie fans are used to seeing tough cricketers

I just don't see it in him, I don't recall any particular meaningful contributions from him. He doesn't bowl long spells, and he often flatters to deceive with the bat. They would be better off playing Webster and pushing Inglis up to 5 and Carey to 6.

Not that we will bat any better but that pitch looked like a 300-4 pitch.

3 wickets too good balls and 1 to a stunning catch.
4 donations.

Tongue bowled 2 poor overs that hurt his economy.

Carse and Jacks going at over 5's is just rubbish.

It's the excitement of watching us bat, it'll either be pathetic or exciting
Carse isn’t Test standard.

We need to get down and pipe off the Aussies that we're even in this test.

Awful bowling all day and gifts galore from the Aussies.

Will Jacks pick is an all time shocking selection. There is no way Bashir bowls that bad.

Have to get these two remaining ones within the first 30 mins of play and somehow bat till the end of day 3.

I just can't see England having the mental stuff to do that though. Aussies would have rattled us for 200 if they'd got us 94/4 just after lunch.

I don't think Bashir would have fared much, if any better than Jacks, but going into two test matches in Australia with Jacks as your frontline spinner is shocking. You can get away with it slightly in a day/night test but not at Adelaide. I read a stat earlier that said Root had bowled more overs in test cricket over the last 12 months than Jacks has in first class cricket. Pretty damning, they should have picked Leach.

Leach isn't here though so it's pointless mentioning it now

Bashir is a miles better bowler than Jacks and should have played. That was as bad of spin bowling as I've ever seen in red ball cricket.

TBF to Stokes negative fields didn't help him one iota. But I don't think it would have made much difference.

One bit of credit was slowing his pace to dismiss Carey. A nice bit of white ball bowling, seeing as they played him like you would in an ODI
