Have to agree. Should be looking at an innings win here, given that we had the chance to absoloutely smash them.

Batting disgraceful. If Root is under pressure then Pietersen should be drummed out of the squad and back to Surrey.

Been saying that about KP for a while now. Why the selectors brought him back staggers me, we won in India without him, he should be told to sling his hook and join the global 20-20 mercanary circus.

oh dear, looks like we're all unhappy again!

We are 260 - 3 in a one innings shoot off with a slowly deteriorating wicket that will get worse with the heat over the next two days and with Australia low on confidence they will be battered batting last on it.

I really hope this forum isnt heading in the same direction as the football one

Sadly it is.

There's been some iffy batting displays so far, but I wouldn't single out KP.

how's that work like?

anyway, rank bad decision not to enforce the follow on. this match is never going to see a '5th day pitch'

how on earth is it a rank bad decision? There are three days left in the game, no bad weather is forecasted, England have a lead of 270 with 7 wickets in hand and the pitch will deteriorate over the next two days. Australia will be required to chase at least 400 (if England bat horrendously tomorrow) with none of their batsmen in any kind of prolific form.

We are in a position of complete and total dominance at the end of day two at Lords in an Ashes Test match. I am really struggling to see why there is so much sniping.

In fact, this thread may even be worse than anything PF has to offer. In footballing terms, England are the equivalent of being 3-0 up at half time to a side struggling for form and without a great deal of quality. It would take a miracle for the opposition to overturn it. Not even on the football forum would people single out certain players for such criticism or the managers decision making when the side are in such a strong position to go on and win the game comfortably.

I dont think its particularly fair to pick out any of players for criticism. Cook, Pietersen, Trott and Prior havent registered the scores that their records suggest they would so far but I would put money on all of them coming to the party in a big way at some point. The only player who I think is suspect at this level is Bairstow. His technique seems vulnerable in a few different areas but he still contributed in the last innings. The other players just seem to be lacking a little form - which happens. Its quite reassuring that we are about to go 2-0 up in an Ashes series with four of our batsmen (arguably our best four) out of nick.

Its also worth mentioning that there have been some very decent individual bowling spells from the Aussies at times so far. Siddle and Harris particularly. They are both very decent bowlers who would cause problems for most international teams in English style conditions

simply because it gave them the chance of a 'sniff' at (what admittedly is still) a longshot.
13 wickets had already fallen on the day. if we'd put them back in & they got to say 50 for 0 by the close, would they have felt any more confident of saving/winning? nope.
but with us at 30 for 3 they'll now be talking about bowling us out for another 100 & sneaking it.

Even if they bowl us out for another 100 (they wont IMO) they will require what I would imagine to be a record 4th innings total to win at Lords.

England rightly made the decision to bat Australia out of the game and enforce them to bat when the pitch is at its most difficult. Grind them down in the heat,
allow our bowlers time to further recuperate and drain their bowlers of energy.

We are 270 runs ahead with 7 wickets remaining and we bat right down the order. We are completely in control of this game. I could understand the criticism if the follow on hadnt been enforced with a dodgy weather forecast on the horizon and time running out but that simply isnt the case

As in England all out for 130? That still leaves them needing 360+ runs to win the match batting fourth with a dodgy top order. I can't see that.

Big day for Root tomorrow - he's the only out and out batsman in the England team yet to register a 50 in this Ashes series so far.

Agree with all of that. Some of the comments on this thread, and indeed the thread from the first test, make people sound like they don't know anything about test cricket. The game lasts 5 days, and while it's nice to rattle off an easy victory in 3 days sometimes, you have to respect the time left in the game. There was a part of me that hoped we would enforce the follow on, but I'm glad we didn't, we've got to put the game completely out of reach, not take a risk on them remembering how to bat properly just in the hope of a quick win.

It's fair enough to say we could have batted a bit better in all 4 innings we've had, but we've still been better than the Aussies and ultimately that's all that matters. How our performances in this series would have fared against other teams is irrelevant, we can worry about that when we're playing other teams. The Ashes is the be all and end all of cricket, and we're miles ahead in this game, 1-0 up in the series and holders, win this test and we'll virtually have 1 hand on the urn.

I pretty much agree with that.

The Aussies also have a couple of very good batsmen and they haven't exactly set the series on fire either, up to now anyway.

That's just the way it is, it's unpredictable, full of twists and turns. It's great.

I've been listening to 5live quite a lot, they had England wrote off at Trent bridge even before England had bowled.

It's not just the smb that is crackers.

Boycott was going his ends with Botham's prediction of 10-0 when Agar was slapping it about. When we win this Test the 5-0 whitewash remains a distinct possibility and isnt as ridiculously far fetched as Boycott was making out

I've got us to win the series 5-0. I suspect the weather might mess my bonus up though.

There was never a case really for putting the Aussies in again.

Tests are often, (too often for me) back to back these days and three out of four of these bowlers, particularly Anderson, bowled heavily only last Sunday. A few sesssions with their feet up will do them no harm at all.

The wicket will wear, Swann will get some help in the second innings - from the pitch this time! - and if we can't score another 150 on that pitch well.......

Something from Prior this time maybe, and possibly Root. Bresnan can bat if he gets in and the tail can have a mad thrash. I'd say we'll get a lead of 450 or so. The bowlers on both sides are clearly better than the batsmen, so anything like that should be enough.
