Any Other School Staff Going On Strike?

Imagine if all key workers refused to go to work tomorrow I.e doctors and nurses and police and supermarkets to name but a few there would be hell on.
My daughters school is closed tomorrow not even open for key workers.
There was a time earlier last year when it felt like the country united now it's just a complete utter mess and people arguing left right and centre

Your last sentence mate was always going to happen if you have a shite government who can’t agree on a strategy. Things are going to start to get better, but the Government are now on borrowed time. Any more fuck ups and things will turn ugly

What's your current job?
I lecture in a college, my wife is a primary school teacher. I have two daughters one is in secondary school where cases have been rife and a younger daughter in primary school. My parent's are in their 70s and they take my youngest daughter to school and collect her. My Dad has a bad heart and has had Pneumonia. The risks are real for all for all of us, not just my family by the way.

The Government are not confusing anything - they have told certain years groups they are starting later, schools in certain areas to close and everybody else to remain open.

The only people looking to confuse it are the Unions and LAs by not doing as described above - they obviously know better but cannot show any scientific data to back it up.

My partner is a school cleaner and of course a union member too.

The UNISON union has advised not to return to work in the school because of the virus. He has sent an email to them to say he will not go. It is a model letter that the union has sent to us.

As black people we are at bigger risk of the virus anyway (the government has even said this) and they have taken no notice when they make their plans!

Is there other people here who work in the schools and will not go to work tomorrow?

According to my friend, who is black, ethnic minorities are more at risk because of the jobs they do like working at airports.

Can't say I disagree with that. Many European countries have millions of cases and have less ethnic minority groups than the UK.

To the teachers on here , Why can’t we get all kids to stay at school for another year . In order to staff this the reception kids would have to go in a year later than normal . Is this not possible ?
It would take the pressure off the system and allow the children to stay off until the vaccination is sorted out .

I think stepping away from this argument between who has the harder job right now you can see why teachers feel confused and betrayed. The tier system isn’t equal if primaries in London are telling kids to go in whilst in the north and other places in the Uk in the same tier are told everything is fine. It’s these inconsistencies and other things that are forcing teachers hands.

I know people from my work place will be teaching from home tomorrow if they’re not feeling comfortable with being in and that’s actually more work than going in and teaching in person. Teachers (the majority) aren’t trying to avoid work, they just want a safe working environment. How has government policy inspired any confidence in their safety?
It's double planning at the minute. People are being asked to plan a face to face lesson and a remote lesson.

Nothing we have quoted the same thing but your interpretation and mine and the unions obviously differ

How can we differ on the bit that says: "closure of secondary schools likely to have a greater effect than closure of primary schools" - scientists said this.

How does that differ to the last 4 months?

A bubble could burst at anytime and the need to shift to remote at 24 hours notice was always possible.

Surely if ethnic minorities were more susceptible to the virus , Africa And the sub continent would be getting hammered far more than they appear to be .

Aren't primary school age still the 2nd most common age range for transmission now. Only beaten by the secondary age. Whatever way you dress it up, school is going to be a huge driver now.

It doesn't. That's what's been asked for since September. Maybe I shouldn't have said at the minute. What it does explain is your second point however. The vast majority of schools should be ready to go online for a couple of weeks at very short notice. The concerns lie with engagement especially the younger the kids are.

This is what the NEU told it's members today

Im no expert and half guessing but what state would early years kids come back in though? The younger age groups would be set back years.. especially the June-August birthdays.

We bumped into our neighbours on a walk to day. We are Tier 4 but not London (Hertfordshire) and our schools are due to reopen tomorrow. She works as a teaching assistant in a primary school and is dreading going back tomorrow, clearly did not want to. I hope for her peace of mind she doesn't.

you don't see the irony in your own post? having a go at teachers in the first sentence, then saying people are arguing left right and centre in your next sentence.

there's a sliding scale of who should and shouldnt be at work. teachers and schools fall somewhere just short of nhs and supermarket workers. the country would literally fall apart without those people. the country could cope with the schools shut for 2 weeks.

the government should have announced this the week before xmas. 'all schools to shut for the first 2 weeks of january, classes to be taken remotely as much as possible'. simple. effective. not ideal, but everyone involved would have had 2 weeks over xmas to sort themselves out. and thats not using the benefit of hindsight, there was endless amounts of people campaigning for something similar all through decemeber
Hope the teachers that feel it is "too unsafe" to attend school don't expect any supermarket workers to attend their place of work and are quite happy eating what's in the house for the next fortnight. Wouldn't be like a teacher to be hypocritical now would it?

divide and conquer divide and conquer divide and conquer divide and conquer

There's no way I would allow my parents in their 70s near the school. I use breakfast club instead.

You're right though, the risks are very real.
