Another youngster heading off

Sunderland will hate losing their latest talent, but understand they cannot compete with clubs in the Premier League when it comes to continuing their football education.
How does being with a Premier League club help with a footballer education, is it not more of a case of feeding their egos?

Chris Rigg only 14 but playing well for u/18’s. Regarded as the best in the country at his age. A midfielder who scores goals. Very young and the premiership lot can afford to gamble on his continued progress.
Does anyone know where he’s from and who he supports?
My hope is our billionaire part owner can complete 100% purchase of the club asap and put plans in place to financially secure these young players immediate future. This production line needs to be successful for the longevity of our academy and club. 🔴⚪

He’s a mag

I see your point but Dan Neil with 30 odd first team games is way ahead of most of the ones who left and have barely made a first team appearance at currently higher ranked clubs. It’s a difficult one.
Dan Neil is a totally different profile to the sort of player we’ve been losing - he’s 20 whereas is 14-17 years olds we’ve been selling

It’s fairly normal that an 18 year old joining a premier league club won’t be making as many appearances as a 20 year old playing for a struggling league 1 side.

One that is a good comparison is Greenwood who’s also 20. He only had 3 appearances for Leeds but has 2 assists in those games and the manager has already said he’ll feature a lot more

IIRC Neil had Leeds and Newcastle interested in him a couple of seasons ago.

He opted to stay at his boyhood club with the aim of breaking through.

There's absolutely no guarantees mate, but they're obviously confident in their ability so surely the opportunity is too good to turn down? Like I say, if it doesn't work out then there'll be league 1 clubs who could be there to give them a second chance. You must wonder what if, if you don't give it a go.

What being at a PL club gives a young player is a bigger safety net if (as is the case for most) they don't break into the first team. A PL under 23 could be picked up be a Championship or L1 club, whereas anyone released from a L! club is looking at League 2 or non-league. Making the move improved their chances of a decent pro career at any level.

They'll be confident and ambitious. Its human nature to be tempted when you take the red and white blinkers off. Suppose where we have an advantage is that our academy is still highly rated even though the club has fell to league 1. All I'm saying is it potentially gives these lads a platform to make it at a higher level. Then if it doesn't happen, clubs further down the pyramid might be more willing to give them another opportunity.

i thought they only left because of the previous owners...

tunrs out its the league we are in after all..as some of us pointed out
So you’re using someone’s off the cuff comment and opinion to now back yourself to criticise the people on here. This includes the mother of one of the lads who was being hawked about by the way or is she also wrong?

people who are local to safc wont want to say that their kids want out so they can get to the prem. so they say the owner forced them.
btw none of the players that leave would come with compo unless they rejected a contract on at least the same terms as they were on before...so...why did they reject the contracts?

Very simplistic view which isn't helpful and not strictly true. We picked up Nicky Gyimah who was previously released by Peterborough. Even Matete was released by Reading then picked up by Fleetwood.

There's no hard and fast rule that you have to be at a PL club to make it through Academy football.

We should be selling the success of our Academy, our Cat 1 Academy to our own lads who are already on our books. Stressing this is the best place to develop and become a Pro footballer.

This happens all the time. Newcastle lost Lee Clarks son to Liverpool as well as, I think, Shortire to Man U. The difference now is, I think and hope, that the club now wants to keep talent whereas under Donald we were actually touting our young talent.

You saying she’s not being truthful? Interesting.
