Wrong. Trump is infusing the immigration debate with xenophobic fear mongering. And yes, Trump created this.

Nope. The democrats have been pushing for comprehensive immigration policy for years in attempt to prevent the xenophobia that exists about the issue today. The very xenophobia that Trump creates and thrives on. That's still the goal today and a wall isn't going to help our immigration problems in the slightest.

Trump had two years with a Republican Senate and a Republican House. If it is such a crisis*...why did he do nothing for two years about securing the funding for his wall/fence?

Xenophobia? Are you deranged? Trump has said on countless occasions that he welcomes legal immigration. All he wants to address is ILLEGAL immigration, simple as that. The democrats are eating themselves opposing a policy that cannot be opposed with any semblance of logic.

A lot of the people turning up at the Mexican border are from central American and are wanting to claim asylum. They aren't even trying to enter illegally.

Seriously, do you actaully know the estimated numbers of illegal immigrants in the USA today?
 
Going to very interesting post wall, when nothing whatsoever changes to the immigration rate and the American need for drugs

Will the wall be extended around to the whole coastline of North America? Fitted with a glass dome?

The greatest amount of illegal immigrants are ones who overstay legitimate visas (i.e. don't leave the country when these expire). The number entering across the border only account for about 1/3. how many times have you heard Trump talk about addressing these visa overstays? If he was serious about cracking down then don't you think he should at least try to do something about them? This is why it becomes obvious that building the wall is less about reducing illegal immigrants and more about needing to make good on a campaign promise to appease his base.

Finally, the idea of the wall was never conceived or backed by any experts dealing with border security, it was a device to ensure that (given his gnat like attention span) Trump remembered to talk about immigration at his rallies. Apparently he wasn't that bothered about it until the crowd got behind it:

“Roger Stone and I came up with the idea of ‘the Wall,’ and we talked to Steve [Bannon] about it,” according to Nunberg. “It was to make sure he [Trump] talked about immigration.”

The concept of the Wall did not click right away with the candidate. “Initially, Trump seemed indifferent to the idea,” writes Green. “But in January 2015, he tried it out at the Iowa Freedom Summit, a presidential cattle call put on by David Bossie’s group, Citizens United. ‘One of his pledges was, ‘I will build a Wall,’ and the place just went nuts,’ said Nunberg. Warming to the concept, Trump waited a beat and then added a flourish that brought down the house. ‘Nobody,’ he said, ‘builds like Trump.’”
