I was under the impression Mendy wasn't even necessarily our top option but that we had a few we were in contact with. I can't pretend to know much though, that was just the impression I got, feels like his agent has spun a story that made people think we were extremely desperate for Mendy and only Mendy and he only wanted us.

I would be baffled if a professional recruitment team only had one candidate for the position.... But it's Sunderland so who knows what to think.

Then it boils down to: are they very confident the deal will happen?

If not you have to wonder why they can’t/wont solve this major issue window after window.

If there were other genuine options it'd be leaked at some point, clubs wanting a better fee, agents wanting to play clubs against each other, etc. The absolute radio silence outside of Mendy (and to a degree Ugbo) suggests all our eggs are in one basket.

Considering we need 2 it's unbelievable how nonchalant they are about the squad, and making it 4 windows in a row were we haven't really improved the team. Don't think poveda helps anything either, especially when yet again we have signed someone unfit

He's still not training with the team, despite their takeover having been completed. He's not getting linked with a move elsewhere and even no suggestions that he might stay after all. I think if there was any doubt there would be noise coming out of one of those two scenarios happening.

Aye, the big problem here was messing around with daft bids before Mbappe took over, should have just got it done and he could have been involved in a bunch of our pre-season.

It’s a massive worry.

A message I got yesterday implied that we have no other deals in place so it would be Mendy or nobody.

Which in my opinion, could potentially then lead to an absolute panic buy. I dread to think how toxic the place would end up if we didn’t get a deal done.

Tbh the whole leaking of the Mendy deal is what makes me think it's much further away than those leaks suggest. Suppose nobody on here can know either way but I reckon there's at least some conversations being had with other targets behind the scenes, we've seen a lot of business suddenly crop up the day before or the day it happens in some cases.

From what I remember of the last year: Pembele, Seelt, Matete today, Burstow were all done within a day or 2 of suddenly becoming rumours.

What kind of a way is that to run a football club mate? Mendy or nowt? ....."succession in planning"..:cool::cool:
 
We don’t know how far away the deal is but if it’s a couple of hundred k it has to be worth it to get the deal done. A good start makes all the difference and like the OP the early points could come in precious in May.

I was at Preston last season and we had dack as a false 9 iirc. We didn’t play badly and a real forward might have made a difference. As it was we lost the first 2 and lost all momentum from the previous season. Ipswich kept their momentum from L1 going and look where they ended up.

I don’t even necessarily think we need 2 me, it would be ideal aye, but if we were to have a solid 40 game, 15 goal striker that would be fine with the 2 others we have playing a supporting role (I’m saying 2 assuming 1 would be loaned out.)

Plenty of teams have 1 main striker, it’s mental that we can’t even get one.
