2nd test Old Trafford

He averages over 30 with an Ashes 100. Moderate but you are only as good as your direct competition and hes better than them IMO.

Only caveat to that is that that Ashes 100 was one of the luckiest I’ve ever seen. But yeah, I’d have him in too.

I’m old school and want our openers to block out the new ball and set up the game for our stroke players.

I would sooner have Burns than Crawley
Crawleys nerves must be shot, and you can't keep simply hoping he will put the loose shot back in his locker.
Burns?...Yea he looks awkward, its not text book, but owt that works for an opener.
We do need a defensive opener, Alex lees isn't it, crawley certainly isn't it, but lees has a better technique at the moment.
Englands new .."We can chase 300 second innings" or whatever..will fail more times than it succeeds in a year of test cricket in my opinion.
We need a solid base..We really haven't got it

I agree. How many great opening batsmen in history have been stroke players.

I’ll offer up Warner, Sehwag, Slater, Trescothick….struggling now

People tend to forget because he played soo much white ball cricket.

That Chris Gayle was a good test attacking opener as above

He has literally been mentioned in this thread.
I know I typed the post after reading the some of the other posts the one where Chunky was mentioned other attacking openers then looked through the thread and seen he had already been mentioned.

By then already pressed the post button so then added as above

Opening seems to be the one position where when ur dropped there is seemingly no way back in, unlike 3-6,even root had a spell out of the team at one point during his career due to lack of runs. Opening bat is the hardest position to bat so u would expect more leeway. I'd hope burns would get brought back in the fold and sibley and jennings still in the selectors thoughts rather than trying to fit a number 5-6 as an opener

That’s a really interesting point actually. I can’t think of the last opener who got multiple chances

Jennings has changed his technique since he last played for England. Scored that triple century this season and got to 3 figures on a few occasions.

Burns - we know what we are getting, out cheaply or will grind out a score (done this against very good attacks) - Consistently inconsistent

Sibley - similar to burns but without as much credit for England.

Robson - fairly consistent- middling average but done pretty well this season.

Hameed - having a good season but too soon to recall, but could be an option to tour Bangladesh/Pakistan

Duckett - batting 3 but having a fantastic season, it's a 1 ball promotion and hes a better player then when he was last picked.

Personally think Crawley is in last chance saloon here and Lees has got the next 2 tests to have a tour place in the winter.
Don’t think there is a chance that Jennings comes back. No matter where we maybe playing

continuing with Crawley though , does not make any cricketing sense whatsoever

im not convinced by pope either, as he to me, is someone who has all the shots, then he will miss time a drive to mid off, or leaves a straight one and bowled
I dont think Pope will ever convince me as being a number 3 unless he tightens up playing away from his body (didnt harm Ponting much and tbf that's probably who he should be trying to emulate).

Vaughan....tresco and vaughan in this team...
