Ok. So we are level or better as a squad right now and you disagree with the thread? Are we already there now as a squad and dont need to catch up as a club to the likes of Villa. Did we have better options on the bench yesterday than Villa?
Wouldn’t go that far as we barely played the ball into him. I think we contributed to that massively. They are a big quick side though.I think people mean throughout the whole 11 more or less. Their massive CBs are the only ones I've seen pretty much neutralise Brobbey
I think their first XI comfortably beat ours until John McGinn and Watkins went off. Our bench did better than theirs....could we be exactly in the position Villa are as a club and have the squad depth they have? I think that was the biggest factor yesterday, their depth and their options off the bench. We went toe to toe with them and nearly came out on top...just that extra bit of quality in the attacking third needed for the first 11 and depth in the squad. We have come a very long way in a very short space of time. Immensely proud of the club and the players what they have achieved so far this season...it could get even better in these last 5 gamesonwards and upwards!
2 of their subs got a goal and an assist aswel. In general, Villa are ahead of us as a club and a squad imo.I think their first XI comfortably beat ours until John McGinn and Watkins went off. Our bench did better than theirs.
One thing I reminded myself yesterday is how class John McGinn is. In the history of the Prem he is a forgotten gem almost, or at least I think he will end up that way....could we be exactly in the position Villa are as a club and have the squad depth they have? Are we playing football or rugby? Were you there yesterday mate? If you were, you would have seen how much bigger some of the Villa player's were to ours.
That doesn't seem too far fetched mate. All winnable games for me. Yeah, McGinn was class yesterday, much better when you see him up close. Cracking, strong little fucker. One thing I reminded myself yesterday is how class John McGinn is. In the history of the Prem he is a forgotten gem almost, or at least I think he will end up that way.
It seems a lot, but I am hopeful of 9 points from these last 5 games.
You know it's football....dafty.Are we playing football or rugby?
I agree. It's class! Its impressive the team we have built though, in my lifetime I haven't seen a Sunderland team that has been as physical, quick or skilful as the current lot.
We are also incredibly well organised on and off the ball. Our league position is no accident.
For the select couple it isn’t as critical. The test need to get almost all purchases right. One bad window and the drop can be massive.Aye, there's just the slight issue of generating an extra £300 million a year in revenue within a couple of years.
Money isn't everything in the game and you can have teams that break into the top six every now and then, but they won't stay there consistently unless they can fund it properly by buying some of the top talent available.
The mags can't even manage it.
We were one poor decision away from winning it....could we be exactly in the position Villa are as a club and have the squad depth they have? I think that was the biggest factor yesterday, their depth and their options off the bench. Why not if the club is run properly absolutely...could we be exactly in the position Villa are as a club and have the squad depth they have? I think that was the biggest factor yesterday, their depth and their options off the bench. We went toe to toe with them and nearly came out on top...just that extra bit of quality in the attacking third needed for the first 11 and depth in the squad. ...i know, ..i was there. We were one poor decision away from winning it.
Exactly mate. Why not if the club is run properly absolutely
I actually don't think Villa have spent that well in the last few years. A lot of their major players have been at the club for quite a while now. I know they always say they are held back by PSR but if you have a look at their signings over the last 5 years you might be surprised at how much they've spent on players who haven't played that much for them. The same for the mags too. The only way to do it is to get your recruitment absolutely spot on. Villa have done that better than the mags, but even they’ve made some errors like Sancho & Elliot.
Unless you have the revenues of City, Man U etc, you can’t afford to buy more than a couple of duds. Newcastle have wasted an absolute fortune on Wissa, Elanga & Woltemade. They also don’t sell very well. If they want to get some money in to go and build a better squad then they need to be cashing in on the likes of Tonali & Gordon now.
The only way you’d get close to generating the revenue the top clubs do is buy getting it right off the pitch over the course of 5+ years and regularly qualifying for the champions league.
Were Villa in the champions league in that year? If they were, that will have come down a lot this year even if they are doing well in the Europa.Going to be very difficult to compete with Villa, even when our Premier League/higher sponsorship beds in, we will still be at £100 - 150m a year behind them. (They got £378m at last reporting year, Newcastle £334m, next highest West Ham at £231m.
We entered the league in a PSR (I know its a new system coming in) sweetspot not seen for many a year. It'll catch up to us as much as everyone else unless we sell our best players, and if we sell our best players we won't be troubling the top 6.
I'll be chuffed to bits if its safely midtable again next season and season after and a chance in the cups.
Edit - I'm 53 and I have never seen Sunderland genuinely solidly establish themselves in the Premier League. Even the 10 years under Short were a constant struggle.
Not sure mind. As RLB always says, it’s about moments. I thought we were the better team first half. Brain fart in the opening minute of the second half gave them the momentum and opportunity to control the game. They were anything but comfortable in that first half.I think their first XI comfortably beat ours until John McGinn and Watkins went off. Our bench did better than theirs.
