Biggest away following for league game

this picture was posted on here a while back from the man city game. it's from pretty much near the half way line with the main end to our right. apparently the lad with the top on is quite well known and there's also a younger version of me on it. as has been said before, man city fans were great that day.

I was sat 3 rows from the front half way line Kevin Ball was sat next to the dug outs when we scored the second he turned and asked what was the Luton score ( check youtube) . Bought a ticket outside the tout wanted £20 gave him the money he gave me a tenner back because he was about to get rolled by loads of lads from Hylton Castle he was a bit stressed 😂

Cardiff 1980 concidering the distance, has got to be the best if ever the chant Sunderland take over everywhere they go it’s got to be that game, three car loads of young scallys from Peterlee , don’t think any cars were legal or passed there tests, what a game that was, brother got locked up £250 pound fine at the time was a fortune, mates car blew a head gasket on the way back, he just left it and had to hitch back.the support that day was immense

I actually witnessed that - it certainly brightened up an awful day for a while!

The lad concerned was cuffed on one wrist by the police when arrested, but he later managed to escape on the motor bike. It was hilarious seeing the cops chasing after him on foot as he weaved his way through the massive crowds!

The daft sod was rearrested a day or so later after he went in to his local fire station to ask for the cuffs to be cut off (firemen Sam didn't believe his story about it being a prank that went wrong!). Iirc, he got jail time for his shenanigans.

3-4 got arrested on the garage for court , helping him escape.
Sunderland all over the ground , probably 12-13k. Would have been clearer how many had Paul Stewart put that chance away
City probably 14-15k

Funny lad, was in a Plymouth away bus from midnight years ago and this lad was on the bus. Cracked some great one liners. Hope he is still well. Sure he had a Sunderland top with number 2 on the back that day
I remember when he painted his porsche with red and white stripes before the League Cup Final in 1985.

That Villa stat is incredible.
"The Fulwell" ( ex poster on here, uber fan ) says 20,000 there, so surely biggest ever away following for none cup SF or final game ?

As you say not exact, I suspect the city game declared attendance is likely lower than actual.
I was with loads who walked from the centre and got to the ground at half time 😬, gates were opened and we were herded in, didn't pay. Hundreds of other SAFC that I saw did the same.
Was hilarious watching mini-buses of lads, spilling out mortal no doubt having got lost or stayed in pubs too long.

I’ve met a few Cardiff fans who said the get wax fiddled. The ground at the time held 36k and it was rammed and even they laughed at the 19k crowd.

I was at Man City and Gigg Lane but one that sticks in my mind was Blackpool in September 2065
We won 2 1 Jim Baxter scored with a penalty just under the crossbar and Nick Sharkey got the winner
I don't know how many Sunderland fans were there but the crowd was 28 000 and there seemed to be our fans all over the ground
I remember a Blackpool fan commenting that he thought he had come to the wrong ground

Wrexham 79 was there, its a F ing long journey 😂
It isn't. It's only about 3 hours to North Wales. Cardiff is nearer 6.

Wimbledon's lowest crowd in 96/97 was 3,800 (v Pompey, you would imagine at least 800 away fans).

Last day when we rocked up there was over 21K there.

What was the away following supposed to be when Leeds managed their record home gate? From what I understand there was a lot of us there to help boost it to record levels

I was at most of those games.
Stoke in the cup in 1976, was estimated at 10,000 Sunderland fans in attendance, and the same for Norwich in 1977.

I also remember there being a dangerous overcrowding situation at Elland Road, when around 9-10,000 of us turned up there, in the mid to late,1980's
Re:Leeds. Was that the one where we had just been promoted from 3rd div? We had all one end and then they had to open the side paddock as the end was so overcrowded. Thousands down that day.

Aye.

I was behind the goal, and it was chokker, so a section of the Lowfield Road stand (iirc) was opened, to allow more Sunderland fans, into the ground

I think the West Yorkshire police were caught out, by the huge amount of Sunderland fans, who turned up that day.
