Biggest away following for league game

Especially for the plod who had his mortorbike nicked
I actually witnessed that - it certainly brightened up an awful day for a while!

The lad concerned was cuffed on one wrist by the police when arrested, but he later managed to escape on the motor bike. It was hilarious seeing the cops chasing after him on foot as he weaved his way through the massive crowds!

The daft sod was rearrested a day or so later after he went in to his local fire station to ask for the cuffs to be cut off (firemen Sam didn't believe his story about it being a prank that went wrong!). Iirc, he got jail time for his shenanigans.

I was at Villa, Man Utd in the 70s, Hull, Wrexham, Wimbledon, Man Citeh, Everton in 77, Boro at Ayresome many times, league games. All massive followings.

As previously mentioned, Notts County in 1993 had a big turnout. Pitch invasion and I think the crossbar got broken. Awful performance and horrible atmosphere with supporters fighting amongst themselves.

Tranmere in 1996, promoted. Another big turnout and the cheer when Aldridge scored a pen as Man U scored againt 'Boro to deny mags the chance of winning the league.

Massive turn out for Norwich away when we got relegated can’t recall how many but there was a good few thousand.

Man City away , relegated yet still 2nd best away game I’ve been to and went to loads back then, absolute scenes at times
Remember that well, was a mini bus of us and after game went to get fish and chips from a nearby chippy, two coppers approached us and ask us to hurry up, we said we getting food what the problem, and they replied your in the middle of moss side and not very safe there.

Villa '75
Couldn’t get down to that. No coach places left for love nor money. Was still at school and didn’t drive. Gutted to miss it.

Was at Wrexham last game of the season (2-1 win)
Man City last game of the season (3-2 defeat)
Hull City at Easter (4-1 win) & at the first game of the season (0-3 defeat….Battle of the Little Chef)
Liverpool last game of the season (1-0 win, Stan Cummins goal)
……probably others

City was supposedly 11k Platt Lane seats & 4k Kippax standing
Wimbledon at Selhurst Park side stand was 8k allocation, but we probably had over 80% of one end and the main stand . Wimbledon were gathered behind one goal. It would appear more at Wimbledon than City .

16 April Hull v Oldham 5,546

Its by no means an exact science but the above must give at least some indication of the Sunderland support at each of these games.

I didnt do Villa me Dad would take me, or Wrexham / Wimbledon.
We had massive followings at York, Norwich, Cardiff,Liverpool,Stoke FA Cup, Man City. Tranmere. Wigan we had about 8000 all down one side.
Leeds we always used to take loads down. My first game against the Mags we had all the Gallowgate, next one we had all what was left of the Leazers and round into the Paddock.
It used to be great just planning to do an away and just rocking up without the worry of all ticket games. happy days of Tennicks Tours from Monk Street and Northern Airways from Park Lane.

We were in the Main Stand at Man City, i'll never forget that day, it was amazing even though we went down, there was Sunderland everywhere, we were surrounded by City fans but when we scored we were up on the seats, the City fans were great and were gutted for us at the end.
Was in our section of the Kippax. Incredible day. Respected City fans ever since tbh.

I was at most of those games.
Stoke in the cup in 1976, was estimated at 10,000 Sunderland fans in attendance, and the same for Norwich in 1977.

I also remember there being a dangerous overcrowding situation at Elland Road, when around 9-10,000 of us turned up there, in the mid to late,1980's

York in the 1970,s

Biggest % I was ever in was V York in mid 70s. Must’ve been 90% SAFC. We won 4-1 iirc, nivver saw a single one of the goals.

York 1975
21 October York v Charlton 4,345
1 November York v Sunderland 15,232
15 November York v Fulham 3,414
