Biggest away following for league game

Wembley surely?
Excluding
Anfield in 1981 where we won 1-0 on the last day of the season, to beat the drop, there'll have been around 10,000 of us at the game.

That same season, we took around 10,000 to Boro, in February, and there was hell on, before the game, when we walked to the ground from the train station, during the game, with Sunland in the Boro home end, and fighting breaking out in the stand at the side, and fighting on the edge of the pitch, as the game was going on, & mass brawls after the game, as we made our way back to the train sta

I was at the game. We had fans in one of their paddocks too. Massive turn out and absolute carnage in the streets after the game.
Always with Boro

I was at Man City and Wimbledon and until this thread I’d never considered Wimbledon to even be close to Man City. But I guess it might make sense.

Maybe it’s because I have fond memories of the Man City day despite the result but Wimbledon was a miserable event (apart from I seem to remember a lass streaking at kick off or something).
We were in the main stand at Man city behind the dug outs there was 1000s not 100s in the home ends ive never seen as much as that ,City fans were class 👍

Man City away , relegated yet still 2nd best away game I’ve been to and went to loads back then, absolute scenes at times

Fantastic memory that day … a day when two hero’s were playing against each other Quinn and Marco

City fans were class that day I agree
Wigan is biggest one I've been in. Didn't go to the cup semi at OT.

Wigan was a topper as well

Doubt it.

Wimbledon only got about 3K of their own fans for home games. There lowest crowd that season was 3,800 against Pompey. There was over 21K there that day. Must have been well over 15,000 Sunderland there.
It was reported at the time that we had around 15k at Maine Road

We were in the Main Stand at Man City, i'll never forget that day, it was amazing even though we went down, there was Sunderland everywhere, we were surrounded by City fans but when we scored we were up on the seats, the City fans were great and were gutted for us at the end.

Absolutely my recollection too.
Was with my late (Rosie RIP) brother in law who was a City fanatic and about 10 of his City supporting mates in the Kippax and the whole day was fantastic.
Both sets of fans got on brilliantly, pubs were rocking and game was exceptional.
City fans reckoned they hadn’t seen away turn out like it and as someone else has said, were gutted for us but pleased to finish ahead of Utd for the first time in ages.
Of course, I also been to City v SAFC games where reception was very different and the terraced streets and pubs around Maine Road were dangerous places to be for an away fan.

Marco's goal is still one of my favourite moves and goals, plus his cracker away to Norwich earlier in the season

I recall all the big turnouts in the 70s Old Trafford,Villa park etc ,but I also recall a turnout of approx 250-300 at Cardiff and Bolton and QPR season after relegation in 69-70 season.

There was a hell of a turnout at Burnley in 1995 when we got a point under Reidy to keep us up
I was there, and I think the estimated turnout was around 8,000.

I was at both those games.

Incredible turnout for City (I was in the Sunderland section of the Kippax)

A real belter from Marco, to make it 2-2, and silence the Norwich fans, who were chanting 'You're in the wrong division' after they went in 2-0 up at half time.

It was a season of so near, yet so far, as a Sunderland fan - we scored plenty and always looked like we had goals in us, but we conceded too many, and lost close games, in which we looked like getting a draw from, and we ultimately gave ourselves an unscalable mountain to climb, to survive the drop.

Norwich, Chelsea, QPR, and Man City, were away games where we gave a good account of ourselves, and scored goals, yet we lost each of those games, 3-2, because we were just too leaky at the back.

I think its been mentioned and whilst not the biggest, Burnley away under Reid, there were thousands there that day, we have their version of the Kippax on the side and then the normal shite seats behind the goal. I have never needed a piss as much on that day. We were on a coach and the daft bastards were climbing out of the sunroof  Will have been Jarra Branch.
