Biggest away following for league game


Biggest % I was ever in was V York in mid 70s. Must’ve been 90% SAFC. We won 4-1 iirc, nivver saw a single one of the goals.

There's were also many of us, including me, in the seats in the same side we were in the other week.

Furthermore, boat loads of Sunderland fans were watching from the steep grassy hill outside the Holt End who couldn't gain admission into the ground after the turnstiles were closed.
 
Anfield in 1981 where we won 1-0 on the last day of the season, to beat the drop, there'll have been around 10,000 of us at the game.

That same season, we took around 10,000 to Boro, in February, and there was hell on, before the game, when we walked to the ground from the train station, during the game, with Sunland in the Boro home end, and fighting breaking out in the stand at the side, and fighting on the edge of the pitch, as the game was going on, & mass brawls after the game, as we made our way back to the train station.

Hell on all game down Boro in '82. My first away game. Ground was packed, our end was full so the pigs directed us towards the Holgate. Graeme Hedley free kick the only goal.

Aye, that was the game I mentioned, in February 1981.

It seemed like every pub or side street we came to, on the way to & from the ground, Boro piled out & a large scale fighting broke out, between them & us.

Wimbledon only got about 3K of their own fans for home games. There lowest crowd that season was 3,800 against Pompey. There was over 21K there that day. Must have been well over 15,000 Sunderland there.

Think this will be about right, last game of the season with nothing to play for Wimbledon. I was in the opposite end to where we were officially housed and it was nearly all Sunderland where we were. I was also at Man City seemed like more at Wimbledon, but difficult to judge because Man City had a decent turnout due to a good finish to the season under Peter Reid and a higher finish than Man U for the first time in yonks.

It had always been edgy, in games at Ayresome Park when we were in town, but that particular game, was unbelievable, for the scale of violence, before, during & after the match, mind, Joe Joe Joe Bolton nutting Terry Cochrane and walking straight off the pitch and down the tunnel, before the ref had even got out the inevitable red card, did absolutely nothing to restore peace & harmony, on the terraces. 🤣
 
Man City > Wimbledon imo. Only started going away in ‘83 so missed those big 70’s games.

Been to plenty of 8000 or so games but the above 2 stand out for me.

Most at our place? Chelsea ‘85 Milk Cup semi, Man Utd ‘86 (?) FA cup most I saw at Roker. Gotta be Hartlepool at the SOL.

I was at the game. We had fans in one of their paddocks too. Massive turn out and absolute carnage in the streets after the game.
 
I was at Man City and Wimbledon and until this thread I’d never considered Wimbledon to even be close to Man City. But I guess it might make sense.

Maybe it’s because I have fond memories of the Man City day despite the result but Wimbledon was a miserable event (apart from I seem to remember a lass streaking at kick off or something).
