Things that annoy you about referees

This is it.

Everybody involved with the game is dishonest *except* the referee and his assistants.

The players, manager, coaches and fans are all incredibly one-eyed and trying to cheat any advantage they possibly can by any means necessary.

But if a referee isn't 100% perfect, it's absolute sheer dogs abuse. An absolutely thankless job, but people still trot out all the old cliches about them to try and justify their (bias-fueled) hate.

"Just want consistency"
"A good referee shouldn't be noticed"
"They should be made to explain their decisions"
"They think it's all about them"
More and more are coming round to this understanding thankfully.

The consistency comment from people always cracks me up like.

Logically, if Referee A makes a wrong decision, people would prefer Referee B to also make the same wrong decision just so it's consistent.

This. Refs just can't win.Their job is hindered by cheating managers and players alike. Biased fans also add to the theory that refs are corrupt.

Of course they make mistakes, we all do, but refs are constantly under the microscope more. so than most of us I reckon.

You've got to have a screw loose to be a ref in modern day football!!!

Look at the state of this, VAR cleared it

The level incompetency is off the scale

Without a doubt the refs are honest by and large but they are human and will make mistakes
If only refs had a video review system in place to assist them.

Oh wait.

It's not a handball. Its the natural movement of his arm engaging the attacker. Would you give a pen for the 'holding'?

The lack of stoppage time being added on at the end of games. The rules changed a few years ago where any time wasting was added onto the end, but this lasted all of about 3 weeks.

There’s definitely a lot more time added on now. Regularly see prem games going til around the 100 minute mark which was a rarity once over.

He’s swatted the ball away ffs

A goal kick was then given
Might as well have sent the attacker off and awarded a penalty to the defender.
How are these fools being allowed to have such an increasing influence on the games at the highest level?

'Swatted' 😂😂😂 his hand touches the ball as he reaches around their player. As if he'd just randomly swat the ball with his hand with no real danger in the area. It's completely accidental and in line with the natural movement of his arm

Absolutely. And every incident of it. And if the league can withstand the pressure from the consistent offenders at the top of the pile and not give it up after a few games, the behaviour will sharp disappear. Especially the half dozen players doing it at every set piece capable of reaching the penalty area.

So in this instance you'd give a pen against Fernandes for holding? I think you could make a case for it but bare in mind when you have an attacker backing into a defender, the defender wraps his arms round for balance / avoid getting rolled nearly every single time.

- How quickly they’ll give a free kick for a defender diving
- When they start Yellow carding every foul after about 75 minutes but don’t Yellow card worse fouls in the first half because “game management”

Time taken for free kicks - usually insisted upon by the referee almost as if they are trying to slow the game down.

Leeds Chelsea - 4 minutes in and the ball be in play for probably 25 seconds. The rest of the time was taken by the referee ‘managing’ the players during a free kick prep

That when someone impresses enough to be considered the top (or one of a couple) ref they get pretty much every game between ‘the big 5’ (let’s not recognise Spurs as part of that group), fed up of seeing big calls in these games and Michael Oliver or Anthony Taylor’s face popping up as the ref every time, particularly when Taylor of Altrincham seems to be constantly reffing games involving one or the Mancunian sides

There’s no reason a so called Top ref shouldn’t be doing their fare share of Burnley v Fulham type fixtures and equally anyone deemed good enough to be a premier league referee should get a go at the top of table clashes

When they go to give a foul one way but then see the other player rolling around acting more hurt so change their mind.

Mind this is more on the divers like, I know you're not allowed to upset Spurs fans at the moment, but take Pedro Porro vs Brobbey as an example.

The threshold for a foul being completely different depending on where abouts on the pitch it is, and who the players involved are.

Threshold in the box, with attackers being fouled, is high..

Threshold in the box for defenders being fouled is low

Threshold for fouls on the keeper is non existent

Threshold for niggly fouls in the centre circle is low ..as it is for fouls against full backs by wingers.

Gillet just have one earlier for Chelsea (defending a corner ) cos calvert Lewin dared challenge for a ball. No way that is given as a penalty the other way around

Threshold is just degree of certainty. It makes perfect sense to me. If you were refereeing a game you'd be exactly the same. Refs seeing an incident in real time will have a level of doubt in nearly every call they make. The higher stakes there are in a decision the more certainty they will want in their minds that an offence has committed.

I can see your point, but if your not certain you shouldn't be giving it in my opinion..

It's a contact sport that in it's nature is fast paced and flows end to end .. referees need to respect that end encourage players to get on with the game ..stop blowing every two seconds for nothing fouls, and then stopping the game for 2 or 3 minutes to have a chat with players.

If it looks soft then just wave play on and shout at the diving little twat to get on with the game

Allowing throw ins to be taken a good 5-10 yards further up the field from where the ball went out of play. Refs wave them back, the player takes a couple of steps back but will then just make another 5 steps forward which is always ignored by the ref and lino.
