Things that annoy you about referees

When a corner is going to be taken and all the players are jostling with each other they blow their whistle to go and have a chat to tell the players to stop and they are watching.

Don't tell them. Give a penalty and free kick to the the defence depending on what offence is committed, if any.

The fact that as soon as they go to that screen,a decision is gonna be overturned. Do they never stick with their decision?
Can only recall one, possibly two, instances in the Premier League where the ref has gone to the screen and stuck with their original decision.

This is a major flaw in VAR like. Once they’ve sent the ref to the screen, it’s in the best interests of the bloke in charge of the replays to make sure the decision’s overturned, otherwise he’d look daft for recommending it.

There needs to be a system. Show the replay say three times at full speed from every angle, then the slow motion. Don’t have it paused on the most incriminating frame possible as the ref is walking over then show ultra slow motion replays from one or two angles of a moment without context.

Or let referees make the call and ask for the screen.

Biggest issue for me isn't just with refs.

We have "assistant referees". Very rarely do they actually assist the ref. They should flag fouls they see, and refs should ask their opinion.

Im sick of seeing refs make the wrong decision, while an "assistant referee" had a clear view and either didn't flag or wasnt asked
I get what you mean but they’re on mic and headset to them the entire the game. The ref cam videos we see these days show how much they’re continually in comms with their team. It’s not like in the past where they have to run over and chat to them if they need their opinion

But they clearly dont communicate, on mic or not!

You see a clear foul in front of an assistant referee. Referee hesitates, then guesses.

Assistant refs need to be empowered to speak up, and refs need to use them.

But its not happening.

Also Assistant refs need to speak up on where throw ins are taken from. How often do the mark where the ball went out. Then ignore the yards the taker gains before throwing it in?

@Butcher's Coat I meant give a pen if the defence commits an offence and free kick if the attacking team does.

I've harped on about fouls in the middle 20 meters stopping quick attacks, in a different thread. To add to that,, why do they give a foul then delay the restart until the defence are all back and in position? They're complicit in the ploy of preventing a quick counter. It bugs the hell out of me.

In fact, they do that with free kicks anywhere. Why give the offenders time to organise.

When you hear retired refs in podcasts etc bragging about giving unfair decisions based on whether or not they liked the player involved. And they think that’s like class banter when really just confirms they are indeed knobheads. They were never good enough to play the game themselves so try to find another way to make everything about them

when they know they're going to have to go over to the var screen but hover around the other side of the pitch just to make that walk over to the screen dramatic.
and blowing up for time when it isn't like last night.

Clear to whom?
The home supporter?

Clear to an assistant ref a few feet away, who doesnt speak up and lets the referee (with a far inferior view from a distance away) make the call.

Its more prominent in the non league.

Even when the ball goes out for throw in. AR will often wait for the ref to make the decision THEN they flag to back up his decision

No much annoys me about refs . They have a hard job imo.

What does annoy me though is the continuing dramatic playacting by most of the Pro players .

Every tackle and clash has them diving about as if they were shot.

The EFL and Premier needs to tighten up on this on-field cheating behaviour.

End of rant.

1. Assistant referees

They indicate when:
  • the whole of the ball leaves the field of play and which team is entitled to a corner kick, goal kick or throw-in
  • a player in an offside position may be penalised
  • a substitution is requested
  • at penalty kicks, the goalkeeper moves off the goal line before the ball is kicked and if the ball crosses the line; if additional assistant referees have been appointed the assistant referee takes a position in line with the penalty mark
The assistant referee’s assistance also includes monitoring the substitution procedure.

The assistant referee may enter the field of play to help control the 9.15m (10 yards) distance.

Based on that lets call them linespeople then!

Theyre not assisting a referee if they cant flag a blatant foul in front of them, while a referee 20yards away is expected to make a call with an impeded view.

So I stand by my gripe with refereeing... assistants are under used
