Luke O'Nien

Agree with this mind. The lads been a great servant to the club, and is genuinely a good fella to have around the place, but some folk on here go on like you've called one of their children if you say he's not good enough to be playing or starting games every week.

I think having Geertruida sat there makes things look worse as Onien shouldn't be getting picked before that lad tbh.

Good post marra. I can’t get too vexed about a lad who’s given so much for the club since he’s been here. If this level is beyond him then I’ll still thank him for everything he’s done and expect the club will phase him out.

The Geertruida thing is really strange. When he was signed on loan Le Bris said he saw Geertruida
as a centre half but I can’t remember him playing there at all. As much as I love O’Nien when the option is an international footballer with the CV Geertruida has it seems a strange choice.

In one of the pod casts Luke talks about how even after a win he will always avoid social media for 24/48 hours due to how much negativity there is.

The fact he says 'even after a good game'. Tells me Luke is well aware he will always be singled out regardless. I think thats why Xhaka is now quite protective over him too.
I found it. Its where he talks about footballers mental health.

'Even after a win I usually avoid going online for 24 hours because there'll always be noise and negativity around a pass I missed or a tackle gone wrong which takes me out of the celebratory moment of what will have been a great game or a great win'

That is really telling to be fair, the fact he knows he can't post online even after they have won because he knows he will be targeted is quite sad.

Thats the thing for me. If Luke is all we've got, then fair enough, he has to play, but we started the season with Muks at CB and he was superb there, I get he's better at RB, but we then Have Geerts and Hume who can play at RB who are more than capable in that position, especially given that we're up against a very good Villa side, so why weaken the backline by putting Luke in there and having them two on the bench??

I don't think anyone is actually calling Onien personally, and I don't think anyone can have a go at him for the passion and dedication he's brought to the club. You can tell he's a top ladz but I don't think the gaffer is doing him any favours by starting him and then probably pissing other players off.

This might sound daft to some, but I can see why RLB has started him. I'm also one of the ones who thinks he just drops short of being good enough to be a regular starter.

If you look at the last few games and even yesterday, he was brilliant on the ball (the mag's pass aside). He's confident and good with his feet. He sprayed a great crossfield pass right out to Le Fee (I think) early doors.

But it's just a shame that his positioning / situational awareness and lapses in concentration mean that he will give away chances / goals at this level.

Watkins is a quality player on his day as well that hasd made a mug out of many defenders in the league.

He is good on the ball, but ultimately he's picked at the back to defend and that's what spilts people's opinions on the lad.

He's been thrown in and has tried his best, but he shouldn't be keeping some of the others out.

Can't really say much more than that tbh. Don't want to upset those who get a little too precious over the lad.

“Learn” has to be the most overused word in football talk. Every time anything goes wrong in any match for any team they claim they will learn from it.

Have to say we did not learn from being caught asleep at the beginning of the first half yesterday. Happened again in the second half.😉

he shouldn't be keeping the likes of Aldarete, Ballard, Mukiele out of the side, as they are all much better CBs than him. thats not controversial to say

but to say he's 'out of his depth at this level' is unfair and not factual

If Diarra had passed to Talbi as Talbi was screaming for him to do, we would have won.

It is what it is. We aren't ready for Europe, its a definite case of careful what you wish for.

We need another season in the prem first. We can't manage two games a week.

You dont pass up Europe. We did before and 25 years later we are still waiting

Don't think I've said he's out of his depth have I?...although, I'm sure if he had to play at CB for the whole of the season, I think there would be more than a few saying it.

My main point being is that he shouldn't be getting picked when there's others available.

Onien shouldn't really be getting a look in at all next season if we're wanting to progress.
I wanna get into Europe don't get me wrong. I just don't want us to be Spurs next season either.

Playing Thursday then Sunday.. can we really cope with that?

Tbf, we played 10 more games in the championship over the course of the season.

I think the extra game a week gets used more as an excuse over anything.

The SCR rules are the biggest thing. You have to take Europe if you get the chance but don't think too many people remember that your allowed spend ratio drops to 70% rather than 85%.

He was poor , everyone knows that but yours and some others posts were terrible. Bang out of order. I suggest you read them.

Over and out

This is an objective reporter.
Doesn't have 09 as our worst player.
Maybe he wasn't looking at 09 in so much detail to try and blame him for everything. And he probably realised watkins was on fire and is one of the best strikers in the league.
Its a bit sad imo when footy fans from other teams look objectively and don't put him down as much as the 'support' from his own team.
Interesting that reinildo was the lowest marked player from our team

I find it abhorrent that some fans are waiting for a lad to trip up and make a mistake. Every player in that pitch made mistakes but O9 gets it in the neck.

For goodness sake get a grip on reality if you are one of these people!

We are having a ride we could never have dreamed of and a player who was with us at our lowest point in League 1 and who propelled us to the play offs and served us in the Championship as well as this season is playing.

We won 3 out of 4 with him prior to yesterday!

What is it you want? We have a player who extols the virtues we have craves for many years and who many would be happy if their daughter came home with him and you jump on his back.

He knows his limitations and some fans need to know that winning and losing isn’t one player it’s the TEAM and the CLUB and the FANS TOGETHER.

Give it a break and celebrate the lad!

Love 09 there’s no pile on from me, however I’m sure he’ll feel he could have done better himself yesterday. Not sure we’d given all those 4 goals away with Ballard/Alderete. Maybe harsh, and we’ll never know anyway. Fair to say this team, and definitely including 09 is they have some balls, fight and character.

And Watkins, he’s a clever player. You’re right, he’s tricky when he’s in this form. With his movement he reminds of that stable of English strikers in the 90s. SKP, Sheringham, Fowler, Cole. Not too many of them around these days.

I always wondered why after a game all the players would post stuff on Insta but there would be nothing from Luke until a few days later. Now I know why. How f***ing awful for the lad that he can't celebrate the moment because of fans who think they know it all.

Couldn't have put it better.

Dont know if its been said but seen people blaming for the fourth when for me Hume is as much more to blame. Stands next to Abraham on the wrong side of him for ten seconds and not once takes ownership of him. Get the right side of the striker. Give yourself the advantage

Both their positioning was shite

Aye - When you play top teams this happens.
Gabriele one of the best players in the league , but if 09 had let cherki waltz past him for cities opener , or haaland easily lose him for the winner, like happened yesterday , the amount of fans saying 09 isn't good enough would be the same.

Yesterday should all be about the courage of the team playing away at the 4th best club in the league , and producing an exciting game.
But it's all about how shit our defending was.
