Man Utd v Leeds at Croke Park

Played

All about the money unfortunately. Played them in Stockholm this pre-season and previously in Perth, Australia. Sell outs so both clubs know its financially attractive. Cost north of 5k for Australia 3 game pre-season. Madness imo.
Aye, it's simply a commercial thing and aimed at gaining more 'armchair' fans who will pump money into the club in some way.

Games like this aren't specifically aimed at local fans who already go to games but rather giving a chance to international followers to go to the match.

This is how football is these days as it's all about making money and football at the top is massive globally. More fans tuning in to watch the teams means higher viewing and increased sponsor/advertising deals etc for teams that ultimately help pay the silly money for players fees and wages.

7:30pm kick off - I know it's a pre season friendly but that sounds like a recipe for trouble. They'll be 82,000 there, if 1% get fight-y after a day of drinking it could be carnage.
Is it even that big a rivalry? It's not exactly United v Liverpool.

And it's certainly nowhere near us v Saudi Howaybia.
I lived in Leeds and then Manchester when Leeds were both top 6 teams - they absolutely hate each other. Both city centres were mental on match days.

Probably cooled down in recent years but it's was a proper rivalry in the 90s and 00s.

I can. People will pay €50 to see 2 English clubs play a friendly but want pay €20 to watch their local club. Then they wonder way Irish football is in a mess.

I think the Friday night thing is an issue - often can be a pain in the arse to have to head into town after a busy week at work. Doesn't help that public transport is so poor too. If I go to a game it usually means spending an additional tenner on parking and then not having my first end-of-week pint til I'm home at around 11pm. Hardly the end of the world, but enough to make me say no to a game that I'm on the fence about.

I go to about 5 or 6 Bohs games a season but I'd consider a season ticket if games were 3pm Saturdays.

I was only talking this on Monday at the Bohs v Waterford game. The 5pm kick off was grand. The Friday night games are good if you live in the area. But trying to get from Balbriggan or Swords after work or if you live out in that direction is a nightmare to get to a game or to get home.

This. Got a good mate from Manchester who is a Man U fan. He hates Leeds more than City and only a tiny bit less than Liverpool. It's a proper derby.

Thought that the GAA had a n o foreign sports rule.

I know they lifted it while Lansdowne Road was getting rebuilt. Money talks I suppose.

Rule was lifted about 20 years ago. It was a fairly archaic rule; my only issues generally would be that you don't want to prioritise money-making sideshows over your bread & butter. I guess a Friday night match isn't a huge issue.

It's not a great football venue though- gap behind the goal is too big imo.

It was always a 'made up' rivalry stemming from Leeds. When they became infamous under Revie for being dirty and a cheating club from 1963/64 onwards to mid 70's. Their history from 1919 was usually low level . Playing mainly 2nd and 3rd division standard. Compared to Sunderland who never played outside the top division until 1957 and had a unique record to prove it.
During Leeds' Revie era they didn't have a serious 'Derby' and this is where the new rivalry was born to give their fan base a meaning. Man Utd would never give Leeds a second thought over the years with Man City their main 'Derby' until the 1960's when both they and Liverpool came to the fore as two outstanding teams and the rivalry between them was formed.

Some decent points. Anyone saying its not much of a rivalry better ask old Whisky nose.

"I have always said Liverpool- Manchester United games are fierce in many aspects but it never reaches the levels of Leeds United. Never"

Don't get mixed up with violence between sets of fans. This was instigated by Leeds trying to create and embellish a rivalry with Man Utd who were historically a much bigger club and a lot more successful club , over the years. This does not mean it is now a 'Derby' even though they would like it to be and every opportunity on social media you hear the term scum being used to describe Man Utd. They are just trying to 'big up' their own ego's.I would say Manchester is a big city, population wise, with two huge clubs. This is their 'Derby'. On the other hand Leeds is a big city , with one club, but the population of the city historically have never been football orientated. Average gates and a record crowd of 57,000 in 1967 against Sunderland when 20,000 from the Notth East tried to get in, but many were locked out. Since then their gates have hovered over 35.000 when In the top flight and restricted by the rules of the game. A proposed new ground could offer a 60,000 capacity but this would still not make it a 'Derby'.
