Defoe appointed Woking manager

As a Woking-raised Sunderland fan, this has flabbergasted me (whatever that means).

COYC*/HTL

Mind, former Sunderland strikers have done well at Woking in the past (see Clive Walker).

As a Sunderland raised / long term Surrey resident and WFC / SAFC season ticket holder, yep did not see that coming. The interims at Woking were doing fine.

There is potential there and it's not the bottom of the pyramid by any means for anyone above posting along those lines. There's a lot of people in Woking / Guildford and not much football, so if it did take off....

Wish him well obvs.

Hope he does well at Woking @sismanhatton

Will you go to the open session on Wednesday?

Unfortunately not as cannot drive at the moment and need doctors say so.

Good luck to him, if he can do half as well as BFG, he will do well.

Ha. I spent a lot of my youth in the Maybury Arms, as my dad drunk in there. Grew up in Woodham and Hook Heath. Went to SJB. Still got loads of pals down there, and my sister.

I’ve had a lot of brilliant times (at Wembley, Everton back in 92) going to see Woking. Was aiming to pop down before the end of the season. Even more likely to now.

It’s interesting to see the rise (renaissance?) of Walton & Hersham too. They were much more traditionally rivals (although it was never anything like that really) when I was growing up.

Quite a few of my dad’s mates played for Woking as well The Swans in the 60s/70s and we used to go to Stompond Lane a lot (shame they moved as it was a ground I had a lot of fond memories of).

1991 I mean, obviously. It’s a LONG time ago!

it also virtually rules him out of any top tier job because no club are going to want to be the one to task the risk on someone who has had to start at Woking.

Reminds me of Kevin Phillips who went from backroom staff at a decent level, decided to start up their own career at the bottom with Shields, one wrong turn and it's fucked.
On the other hand, Hartlepool weren't exactly world beaters back in the day.....

Will probably walk away before the end of the season and leave them in the shite if he replicates his last stand here.
I still blame the snake for that. Something went on there. Seem to recall Defoe suggesting that on socials in the aftermath. Think it was when David Preece was talking about his experience with him. Seemed like his personal skills left a lot to be desired.

Good morning, know the Maybury Arms well when Albert and his daughter Sherry run it, started my apprenticeship opposite there at Woking Motors.
Lived in Balmoral Drive, and go down frequently to meet up with Maybury boys.

The old Stomping Lane has fond memories as Woking didn't have a cinder track and no steeple jump facilities.

I was crap at athletics so never sampled the track at Stompond. But when I was a kid I used to pretend I was Steve Ovett running around the track in Sheerwater. Didn’t break any records. We used to get petrol from Woking Motors. Texaco I think. My sister goes to the Maybury occasionally as pal lives round the corner. Anyway. This is a bit niche for non-Wokingians, I guess. 🤣

I like it when ex players start at the bottom like this. Good luck to him. Send him a young striker on loan
I was going to say the same - wants to stay in the game, probably doesn't need to for the money - and willing to step down to an appropriate level to learn.
Good for him!

And Brace is a canny pick to help him anarl.

Yeah, that path didn't work out for Alex Ferguson.

Started at East Stirlingshire, St. Mirren. Aberdeen then disappeared ;)

Until recently I lived in Harrow for 30 year and supported Wealdstone who are one of Woking's National League rivals .

I can assure Jermain that I have it on very good authority that Woking "aint got no fans" and when asked if they "wanted some" they declined.
Had on a minute, are you the Wealdstone Raider?
