Defoe appointed Woking manager

it also virtually rules him out of any top tier job because no club are going to want to be the one to task the risk on someone who has had to start at Woking.

Reminds me of Kevin Phillips who went from backroom staff at a decent level, decided to start up their own career at the bottom with Shields, one wrong turn and it's fucked.
Maybe I’m mis-reading, but, why if he does well, would it rule him out of a top tier job.

If he’s any good regardless of which club and whatever division he’ll make it
There’s lot of qualities/traits a manager/head coach needs to have to be a success and these days less and less of a must have is top class playing career in their past

well it's not but I can't think of a single former player to retire, start at the bottom again and rise back to the top. He might not be interested in being at the top and be quite happy at this level right enough and that's fine but the chances are doing enough at Woking to generate interest from higher up in the pyramid are basically nil
Martin O'Neill?
