The Fishing Thread


Remember my Grandas home made rod and a Scarborough reel filled with this bright orange cat cut of some unknown breaking strain.
Hauled some big cod in off the rock ends at Whitburn where the bird watchers hut is.

Aye I had the rocket fuel .

I used to clean my reels after every session. Soak the bearings in lighter fuel and then dry them on kitchen paper and the add a drop or two of rocket fuel.

I had my Mag elite running right on the edge of spooling up.

One session on Roker pier there was a strong southerly so an aimed for Whitburn and gave it everything. For the first time in my life, and the last time, I cast the whole line off my reel. Good job a had a good tie on knot as it pinged. It was Diawa tournament mono too. 20Lb.
 
Going to a boat and fishing show later,there’s pike fishing lectures and fly-casting demonstrations,looking forward to the film.

Then I saved up all my pennies to buy an Ambassador 9000. They were £39 in that tackle shop in Vine Place but when I went in to buy one they said they were out of stock. Next day they were in the window for £45. The bastards had taken them off sale a couple of days before the price increase then put them back on sale. Next came an Ambassador 650 then a 7000. I think I still have the 6500 and the Atlantic rod.

I remember those, also the Atlantic 484, it was the go to rod in those days just before Conoflex and Zziplex burst onto the scene.

My first proper rod was a 14ft Pateke Morton (the company that become Century) Tony Taylor. It weighed a ton because it had a 5ft Aluminum butt and was fibre glass. I ended up cutting 2ft off and and it was a miles better rod.

9000s were great reels for the rock ends, I got an Abu 12 (still got it) which was basically a 9000 without the brass side plates and ball bearing, just had brass bushes. It was a lottery when you were casting it though :lol:

The side plates on the red ones used to corrode cos they were alloy, I ended up replacing them with the black brass ones and taking the level wind out.

I didn’t like the level wind it got in the way when you were casting.

My first proper rod was a Conoflex DC6 - proper poker I couldn’t cast well as a kid. Combined with a big Mitchell fixed spool.

Compared to then, the Century rods and Shimano reels are a dream
 
Seeing lads out fishing with multipliers is a rarity these days. Everyone is on fixed spools including me and I love casting with a multiplier.

I love the sound as those bearings scream!

Keep em well lubed and they’ll be fine.

I'll never change Jeff, always will be a multiplier man. Smaller, sit better on the rod and a I feel a lot more in control.

I still use Shimano reels and no reason to change from the ones I have been using for years. I have been told by a few people that the older versions were better quality (Japan manufactured).
I used to use Mitchell reels and still have them for sentimental reasons. When I look at them now it’s like looking at an old car and how outdated they look. The 840 I had was a superb reel in its day.
 
Time running out and to be honest think I’m going to have to wait until next season to land my elusive 20lb Boddington Reservoir Pike.
4 sessions last week and Tuesday 1 of 9lb, Wednesday 5 all around 5lb - 6lb mark. Thursday in the gale 1 of 9lb and blanked Friday losing 2 at the net (ffs 🤣).

Ends 31st March and 3 more sessions starting this Wednesday. I think they are getting interested in spawning thus the feeding activity has slowed it down.
How bloody close though catching one of 19lb 8oz in January.

All about learning and full of confidence for next season.

@Jon Dough @Big Jeff - The Free spirit pike rods are excellent and I’ve perfected the use of the bait boat. Loving every minute.🎣🎣
