The Fishing Thread

Difficult to hook Steve, best fished for with freshwater gear 👍🏻

Took my bait boat out this afternoon just to trial it out. First time ever.
It has a built in echo finder that notify’s fish, depth and water temperature.
What a piece of kit. Although predominantly they are a Carp kit I’m going to use it for dropping dead baits out at range.

Went out with my lad and first lesson all about steering it 🤣
Evidently has a range of 200 metres which is overkill. It will prevent any snap offs which is bad news when you leave a fish with treble hooks in it.

Unreal that we sailed over some massive fish shoals. Possibly Carp but it will identify where the fish are. Equally depth and most was at 12 feet.
I am going to fill the hopper with my deadbait and maggots to get the silver fish coming in.
I’ve been thinking about this for ages and how I can adapt the technique to use for Pike fishing. Love experimenting with fishing and hopefully will be out Wednesday.
In addition will use a big bucket to balance some “pop ups” on Tuesday.

Now for that 20 lb er. Hopefully won’t need a bigger boat Mate 🤞🎣
Tried before with bread in harbours mate. Look so easy to catch but couldn't hook one. Found them to be a real cagey fish.
Good fighters apparently.
Interesting they are in the Thames mate.

They are definitely a shy fish to catch.
Never gone for them but seen some big ones around harbours.
Evidently nice to eat.

There was 4 lads fishing the cliff edges between Marsden and Souter today.

All of them on the sea side of the barrier.

That’s a big drop there mind and from a boat you can see big caves underneath. One day that’s coming down and hope to god no one is up there when it happens.

A guy called Granty fishes along there & does very well. There is one cliff mark called the leap of death. Its eroding all the time.
Not for me. A fish is not worth a life.

Has anything more happened to Shields pier after the last storm?
I've just been for a walk onto the groyne and the hole on the pier looks bigger.

I’d have loved to watch the grotto when it fell in.

I look at some of the stuff I used to get upto at times for bait and it was bonkers. I used to get in the water at sand point and kind of swim to pick the carriers off the wall of the ship yard. Dodging the waves to get into Bartrams bay for silvers. Climbing around the rock edges up eyemouth , Dunbar and the west coast , launching the boat down here and not even have a clue which way to get out of the river at Fowey. It’s a bit bonkers the risks over the years

No fear and stupidity all combined when we were younger.
I often look back and think honestly did I do that? Now it’s just a case of cannot see and being clumsy 🤣

Wait for it but tomorrow we might have a better day.

Wind goes westerly light and we have a couple of rocks marks lined to to fish on the flood. High tide is 13.47 so everything looks good.

Hopefully the swell will drop a bit so we can hold bottom so we are hopeful. Going in my mates camper so we can brew up if we get too cold and the fish don’t play ball.

No home game so the planets are all aligned.

@Big Jeff have you seen this Jeffers?A Brit has just caught it in Norway 61 Lb 12 ounces.
What a fish! Incredible.
Went fishing today on a rock mark. Few lads dotted about. Got two fish nowt very big. Both safely returned. Lost a few sets of gear and it was ok when the sun was out but as the sun dropped lower the temperature really fell away and my hands were freezing.

I hope that fish went back. A mate caught one about 40lb 10 years ago and kept it. His excuse was he caught it deep and it probably wouldn't have survived. Strange then that he put all the others back from the same depth.

I put most of my fish back as long as they are not deeply hooked. I might keep one or two mackerel when in season for the pan and a couple for bait but that’s it.

That’s a cracking fish.

My bait for Wednesday Pike session that Mate.
🤣

Lovely fish.👍🎣

Put all my Pike back alive.
Razor sharp teeth and use barbless trebles which makes it easier as well as a rubber based landing net that makes it easier if one of the trebles gets caught in it.

Deep hooking have to be careful and have gone in through the gill covers a few times.
Like Barbel I hold them in the water and a sense of satisfaction when they swim away.

I’ve already recounted the story when I fouled hooked a trout.

I won’t relive it but I was deeply embarrassed at the incident. I like to think I am a responsible angler. I never leave line, hooks or any other waste and always try to handle my catches with respect.
