Luke O'Nien

Can’t f***ing believe the amount of people who’ve called it his last appearance for us or dug him out for a poor challenge following a horrendous hospital ball by Le Fee. Is it a red card? Yes. He’s late, it’s mistimed and he rightly received a red. Was it entirely his fault? No.

People going on like one tackle defines everything about your ability when Gvardiol should’ve seen red for an equally poor tackle in the same game. The same people probably wrote him off after the Charlton home game where he was hooked at half time.

Yes it’s the premier league, yes it’s entirely different but he’s played about 5 minutes of PL football and if anyone deserves a little bit of slack for what was simply a late challenge following a really poor pass it’s him.

I’m not saying he’s going to turn out a brilliant premier league player but neither might a few others in this squad. Give the lad a chance at least ffs if anyone deserves it it’s him.

A lot of pricks out in force today for the lads 2nd sending off in 6 years, some of our fans are proper ***** and forget what this lads done for us and how he's stepped up time and time again proving people wrong time and time again.

100%
And gvardiol is accustomed to the speed of the premier league. He's also not playing after recovering from an injury , not playing competitively for months and he is match fit. Gvardiol was also too slow today in his challenge despite this.
As you said - good players make bad challenges. And especially someone who is not match fit.
Don't write him off. The thing we have learnt about Luke is that he adapts quickly.
I would put money on him playing a part in at least 5 more games this season and being good in them.

Just seen the challenge. I love the fella for what he has achieved with us but you can't excuse that challenge, It's reckless, dangerous and just damn right stupid. I think there is a serious question in there about his capabilities at this level. I know some won't like it but, I think he could be out of his depth.

I don’t find anyone promoting him as a Premiership quality player. It’s the insulting and disrespectful remarks about him as a footballer that stinks.
To many people act like mags simply dismissing the players who got us here as shite. Some of the things used to describe Luke on here make me sick.
He was a championship centre half who has been asked to play in the premier ship in a position we wouldn’t have asked of him in the championship whilst totally off the pace.
‘ he looked like he won a competition’ … actually most centre half’s look out of place in midfield. This is Le Bris fault no one else’s. Luke is a championship defender a bloody good one and a club legend and he needs respect not denigration

As usual something on here is blown out of proportion. 99% of people aren't saying he's shite. Just that he isn't this level. It's an opinion. I'd love to know which of our defenders they'd drop for him like.

It highlights the inconsistency and also how quick people are to jump on 09.

If one of the new lads made that challenge id expect numerous threads mentioning the inconsistency

First thing I posted when the tackle went in was that it’d be bullshit if he’s given red and Gvardiol not.

But after a couple of watches, it was evident O’Nien’s was worse. Could both have been red and VAR should have looked at Gvardiol’s in more depth.

But, again, O’Nien has done that within five minutes of coming on. That’s worthy of criticism. Any notion that it’s some anti O’Nien agenda is daft. Reinildo, for example, was also given plenty of criticism for his kick out against Villa and rightly so.

Because the sensible and normal thing to do is react to a poor pass with a terrible tackle in the 94th minute when 3-0 down and cost your team until the new year when they're going to be short...

Hes got to make better decisions than that.

Look, people are allowed to have an opinion, it's a part of what makes the sport great, you will always get those that know nothing and those that think they know everything. Is he a prem player, I don't think so, but his influence around the club is very much needed.

Why though? To who's benefit? The lad would add more by being in amongst it, he's a positive influence around the club.
Sentiment aside, he is no good on the field, he is a fantastic person to have around, but unfortunately we need more than that at the moment if we are to continue with our plan to avoid relegation.

Nobody would drop anybody for him but he'll play again when needed and I'm confident that he'll prove the doubters wrong, just as he has since he arrived.

We have enough already. No need to get rid of O'Nien this season at all.

I don’t think we’ll be seeing a Mo Salah type interview wth Luke anytime soon. He knows he’s nowhere near starting but won’t sulk about it.

It was a very bad timed tackle, Studs up and high, He wanted to make an impression in the Premier League. Hope he gets another chance. He's a good lad. Probably need him in the next few weeks (after the ban..lol)

Hate to say it, but it's entitled PL only fans having a go at 09. Blokes a legend and it was a bad tackle thats all.

What’s that based on? And Sunderland don’t really have them

His best opportunity to do that was over the next few weeks when he was more likely to get more minutes after the AFCON lads go. His recklessness has cost him that opportunity.

It’s a shame for him

A respectful one. Particularly when it comes to players who got us promoted. The way they are discussed makes them look like turkeys voting for Xmas by getting promoted. Hero to zero overnight.
I don’t think he is premiership standard but Iam not going to sit and listen to people denigrate players from last season without telling them they are out of order.
