Luke O'Nien

Yet none of them have in 15 games and O'Nein does it within 15 minutes.

Hes not at the level and will be a liability. Top bloke but hes a cheerleader now.

One of the new lads make that tackle and there's 20 threads defending him.

Any of last years team do it and there is hell on.

The fact we lost to probably one of the best teams is europe will be lost because 09 got sent off
That would be because they manage to play week in week out without getting sent off whilst demonstrating they are talented and competent at this level.

I reckon.

I completely understand your point, but don't really agree. I slated Reinildo for his embarrassing kick against Aston Villa that got him sent off and cost us 2 points and losing him for 3 games.

But that apart they haven't done that in 15 games. Hes done it within 15 minutes. Do you not see the difference?

It was a terrible tackle and a red card, simple as that. He doesn't need people on here protecting him like his mother. Hes a big lad.

OWWW Billy we would a won that ya knar if that 09 hadnt come on.

Got into a massive fight in the pub with the lads I drink with. They are onien cultists like a lot of safc fans are, and cannot handle any criticism of him. It is really, really, bizarre. It shows how populists like trump get elected, by people who can't think critically and get fooled by personality and don't look beyond the superficial.

Onien was directly responsible for us conceding 8-9 goals last season, and a similar number the season before. He's nowhere near good enough for the premier league, but he's getting minutes as we are short during afcon.

I downed my pint and stormed out and walked to the next pub and sat by myself, can't be bothered with people.
In “things that never happened today ………”

He’s the most likely player on the team to make a tackle like that because he is so far off the pace, having so few minutes. It’s not unusual, it was a bad pass, and he wanted to stop the break and timed it badly. It was a deliberate foul that’s for sure.
If he had played regular I doubt he makes that error of judgement.

Loads of folk expressed concern that VAR would catch O’Nien out in this league as he does some utterly ridiculous things, it’s taken the best part of just 15 mins total for that to be proven correct. I like him and his personality but he’s incredibly limited at this level.

Been reflecting on it, and I don't think O'Nien is necessarily miles below this as some are saying, but I do think his strengths don't fit this team as much as they did in the Championship.

Where he excelled in recent years was in games where we had 50%+ possession, being calm on the ball and moving it out of defense, being brave when teams snuck in behind, with a bit of shithousery to boot. We're now a much, much more conservative team and being organised defensively and staying switched on it what it's all about. I don't think he's at the age, or going to get the game time to ever adapt to that now sadly. He's also a bit hot-headed to say the least, and definitely a player that "grows" into games - so coming on as a sub just might not suit him.

I really hope it's not over after this, but the timing of this ban with AFCON and January on the horizon means he's likely to be replaced sharpish and those cameos likely will be few and far between now.

Will always love him to bits and a rash challenge like that won't change my opinion one iota on his importance to Sunderland.

I don’t think he needs a mistake by one of our players as an excuse to start a fight

Well said, a legend and one of last seasons hero’s
Because every other pass we've made this season has been perfect. Nothing to do with the pass being poor, everything to do with him being slow.

Sloppy passing by the team all game
Think he deserves better than some of the craic on here

Yep … fickle fans. Instant gratification rules.
This bloke will forever be on a pedestal…. He probably won’t make it as a Prem player at his age, but people going on about how he played in the championship. Give your heads a shake man. Looking down your noses at this lad and his teammates who put us here.
Leave last season alone … it’s sacrosanct.

Haway man, that take was bad but it wasn’t because he hasn’t got it at this level. He just miss timed it massively after just coming on the pitch & being sold a short one from Le Fee. He could have made that tackle in any league against any player.
He’s been out injured for months and he’s a 31 year old introduced mid-game and against a team putting in about the best performance you’ll see from a team this year.

You don’t get sent off because somebody misplaced a pass. It just emphasises that he’s way off what it takes at this level.

Love Luke, he embodies everything good about our club’s rebirth - grit, determination etc. He’ll be a club legend in my eyes forever.

However, PL players are rapid, skilful and strong. Sadly he’s not really any of those 3. In his very short cameos against Liverpool and Man City he genuinely looked a bit like he’d won a competition to be there.
