Luke O'Nien

Do you think he saw the poor pass and thought right fuck that I’m chopping this lad down? It happens far quicker than that and I don’t think there’s a decision making moment where he’s decided that’s the outcome. It’s a late challenge that he’s not deliberately thought of and unfortunately it’s high and late. Le Fee deserves a bollocking for creating the situation in the first place.
That’s the issue isn’t it . It happened too quickly for him .

he’s had his little cameo let’s be honest he’s not. a premier league footballer , good for the team to be around the dressing however if he is to stay it would be as a coach for me , january onwards im expecting us to strengthen the depth of the squad and most of the fringe players like this to be moved on
This. I think we've seen his last game in a Sunderland shirt and it's almost fittingly in a 'Luke O'Nien story' kind of way - nine Premier League minutes and one red card. Nice guy, fantastic person to have at the club for many reasons, but a long way away from being a Premier League footballer.

There's a weird fashion on this board at the minute that whenever something bad happens either Roefs or Le Fee is somehow to blame.

I was surprised to see him come on tbh. He wouldn't have been in my mind against a city side that were cruising through the game.

Great lad to have around the squad and the club, but a lot of fans said that this league is a step too far for Onien. I'm not sure the red card surprised that many.

He’s been a class servant for the club and helped us get where we are today , but simply not good enough to get anywhere near this team. I still love him though

A respectful one. Particularly when it comes to players who got us promoted. The way they are discussed makes them look like turkeys voting for Xmas by getting promoted. Hero to zero overnight.
I don’t think he is premiership standard but Iam not going to sit and listen to people denigrate players from last season without telling them they are out of order.
Let it go mate, honestly. Opinions aren't facts they are subjective. If people want to sound silly, let them. It is frustrating. I love the guy as do many thousands of others, and we'll always be grateful for what he has done for us. He is Mr Sunderland in my eyes. We still need him at the club 100%

Nine minutes is far too small a sample size to judge O’Nien imo.

He was immense in the Play Off Semi which, yes is a league below but is as close to the PL as you’ll get domestically.
I think thats fair enough. But at the same time I also think we've seen enough of him in the championship to know hes not making it at this level. I think reggie will have a similar view and we'll not see much more of him this season.

He simply doesn't have the physical presence needed for his position in this league. Big centre halves are almost essential. And if youre not that you need to be incredibly cultured and read the game as well as anyone. Hes neither.

O’Nien was more consistent than Ballard in the Championship, albeit we knew Ballard had a higher ceiling. He’s shown time and again he’s a fast learner and can adapt. He got caught out by a speed of the game at a level he’s never played at after not playing for 6 months. It happens.

It saddens me that people are genuinely rattled by him being a PL squad player. If he was playing every week, I’d get it a little bit. But he’s a squad player. I think at that point it’s personal and you have to look in the mirror and ask where that personal dislike comes from after 314 games and 2 promotions at the club.

Also a good way to decipher who really supported the team in L1 or who drops by for Wembley finals and PL games.
👏

It's a poor pass from a tired Le Fee, but not sure how he becomes the man to blame for O'Nien's stupidity. 95th minute and 3-0 down, 90% of experienced PL players just get to the player and stand him up. It's rash and sheer stupidity given that he may have had a part to play against Brighton and Leeds.

He's been a great servant to the club, but fans should still have a right to criticise him or have the opinion that he won't be good enough for us at this level if we want to progress.

Because its O'Nein. Had Neil committed that foul the same people would be saying he has to use his brain and jockey him etc.

If we get to the New Year and we are still in good order it wouldn't half be a temptation to have a serious go at the FA Cup. Last August such a thing seemed to be out of the question because like a lot of people I believed that by the end of the season we could well be involved in a real fight to keep our Premier League place. Under those circumstances it would be crazy to get involved with a Cup runs with extra games and the risk of injuries to players but at the moment it looks as if our circumstances could be different.

Luke would be a big asset in a Cup campaign like that. After all we certainly don't have another player who has more experience of playing at Wembley . (Xhaka has only made four appearances at Wembley to Luke's five so compared to Luke he's still a bit of a novice.) :D
Would love us to have a go at the FA cup this year. Even if we put out a mixed side, we've still got plenty of good players on the bench/squad if the early draws are kind.

The issue we might have, is that RD3 occurs during AFCON, where the squad depth is already going bo massively stretched.

Red card, from the video I cant tell how much force he goes in with. It's great anticipation by nunes. Silly on the stretch trying to get to the short pass first, but rusty and not up to the speed of the game. People going over the top in both directions

What opinion ? What bit do you not agree with ?
09 was a mainstay last season
His name was down before Ballard.
He has adapted and been a great player at every stage. He was easily one of our best players last season consistently.

Now that some people have seen him for what, nine minutes in the prem league , after months out injured and having played no competitive football for months, some folk like you come to the ridiculous conclusion, imo, that he's not good enough for this level.
The lack of faith in le bris by people like you who sees 09 in training and obviously has faith in him at this level means fuck all to you.

Its just lazy as fuck.
I trust le bris and what he sees more than you mate. So your opinion after 9 minutes of watching 09 , not match fit , playing at this level for the first time is turgid.
Imo of course

Id think most reasonable people would trust that le bris sees he can play at this level - it's why he's picked
Id think most reasonable people would see that 09 has adapted at every stage
Id think most reasonable people would wait and see him play a bit more at this level before coming to your conclusion that he's not good enough to get anywhere near this team.

He will deffo get more minutes at this level. Definitely.

This. He will regret yesterday and rightfully so (and thankfully the city player is ok), but I won’t give up on him just yet.

If people recall, he didn’t even look like
a League One player on his debut.

I also trust Le Bris and I’ll happily be proven wrong, but I’ve seen Luke O’Nien play for more than nine minutes and I’ve also seen more than nine minutes of Premier League football.

It’s not a stretch to say a 31 year old who never previously got near the Premier League, has never looked like a Premier League quality player, and now has a suspension that is 30 times longer than time he’s spent on the pitch time is not, in fact, going to be up to what’s required.

More than 9 mins at this level ?
It seems a stretch to le bris mind doesn't it !
I think you should be out manager instead and belittle more of our players who the coaching and managerial staff think are good enough.
