Keel Crossing [opened 18.10.25] - compendium thread

no, someone wrote it on here as a joke and then all of a sudden it was true 😄
Would hardly be engineering of the scale that raised the Costa Concordia. The bridge seems quite deep and if designed in from start, could easily have been recessed when big crowds. Going by what was said after the rugby and the fact stewards were positioned to stop people walking into them suggests for big events could be a pain. Think easy to walk over a bridge and around a seat but apparently not. Someone said it as a joke but I actually think it isn't a bad idea at all but everybody just piles on and takes the piss. It's academic anyway.

Ok, so what I'm saying is if you would vote labour for what they have done for Sunderland city centre so far, would you vote to keep Starmers lot in if there was a general election. I'd say no.
Don't forget Sunderland council also want to prevent the Stadium extension, and have refused to address the post-match Kier Hardy parking which they themselves have declared dangerous to life.

(Some on here seem very happy with it, but most the new buildings are like something from Gateshead town centre)

I've been over the bridge and if you walk into the seats then it's your own fault for walking into the seats.

You seem unhappy enough without making things up to make yourself more unhappy about things. Look for the positives. There's loads if you open your eyes and look around the place.

I've not seen the seats or where they're positioned but are they not HVM's (hostile vehicle measures) to stop vehicles being driven into the crowds.
I've done these in Birmingham and they're dressed up to act as seats. Unfortunately in this day and age they are a necessary bit of street furniture where large crowds are congregated.

I've just walked back from the Stadium via the 'traditional' route and there are benches, bins, planters, bollards, big kerbs and all sorts and people seem to have managed to not gan arse owa tit.
Put some benches on a bridge and all of a sudden we're going to be tumbling over like dominoes in an earthquake.

*Although as a youngster I did run into the crash barrier at the Wheatsheaf without seeing it so I guess anything is possible.

It’s no different to any other street in that respect?

On a more practical note I believe the depth of the bridge structure is to carry utilities so doubt that could work. Even if it could, I’m not sure how such a system could practically work and the maintenance cost for it would be considerable. Guess you could argue that you could simply unbolt them and move them for each event.

WTF...

Do people normally walk into stuff that is right in front of them?
Even in the strange circumstance someone did (similar to say a lamppost if you’re caught in the middle of talking to someone), at most you’re likely to take a slight clip to the knee or shin and say ayah, while your mates laugh and then you carry on. The way some have gone on about benches it’s as if you’d hit them and do a flip over the railings and into the river.

Cant wait for this to open, I think it will really add to the city and mean that the excellent Sheepfolds will be seen as part of a night out in the city centre, rather than a bit of a trek.

The only very small negative is I can see a lot more people drinking in the Dunn Cow pre and post, and I hate witing to get served

I still can’t, and don’t think I’ll ever understand why people don’t get the distinction between local politics/councils and government.
Its baffling.

Some of them are just morons, some of them know the difference but don’t care.
