SOL expansion

Just been reading comments from mags regarding their supposed new ground. Quite a few saying that if they ‘only’ build a 75k stadium, they need to make sure that it’ll be easily extendable in the future. Meanwhile we have people questioning whether we should increase the south stand with an extra 5k seats. I know mags are seriously deluded, but it does show just how over cautious some of our fans are.
Any English football fan other than man utd who thinks they need a ground that size should have their opinion instantly dismissed. The reason a few of us are cautious is because we know how quickly things can change. There needs to be evidence of long term demand, although I understand the argument for improved corporate facilities and generally modernising the stadium

the east stand has the most potential, you could really do a lot with it, we’re limited with how many corporate fans we’ll get but if we built above the car park you could create a mixed use centre with anything you can think of arcades, food courts (who know you could get places like Nando’s in there), mini golf, escape rooms all places ordinary fans and families could make a day of and people all year round could go and spend money and connected to the city centre via the new foot bridge.

Clubs like ours in my opinion will need to think outside the box to raise revenue we can’t match the London clubs for £10k - £15k a year corporate season tickets. We need to diversify

Not a good comparison really. The mags have had Champions League football over recent years while we have suffered big time in League One.

I'm all for extending the South Stand but to suggest our supporters are negative because the Mags are positive is absolutely stupid when you consider the position of both clubs over the last 10 years at least.

Need to move away from thinking the SOL is only used as a football ground.

It’s not. It’s a community stadium now used for sport and music concerts.

Extend in the right way and the internals could be univeristy lecture theatres etc through the week or office space for digital nomads/remote workers etc.

Also increasing corporate boxes to the east stand would be cheap and effective.
It's mainly used for football though. That's just a fact.

Why would they use it for university lectures when there's two university campuses nearby? There's quite a bit of existing office space nearby too.

If they can afford to build it i dont see any reason not to tbh as it will be a sign of ambition and i couldnt give a shit whether we fail to fill it as our magnificent stadium will be improved! Think small time you stay small time !

The stadium needs improving, I'm happy to agree with you on that

We just need to go for it. If you stand still you are nowhere. Couldn’t give a toss that we spent 4 years in league one - can you imagine if the board thought that way when we got promoted?!

Team is in PL, we have some good players and setup off the field. Need to stop thinking of the worst and start working to be the best we can be.

If you talk to actual match going mags (those with season tickets), most of them don’t want to leave SJP and think 5000-8000 extra seats is fine

It’s the plastic ones, that had no interest before the takeover, that want some stupidly big stadium.

Tbf, Liverpool are in the same grouping as Utd. They could both easily have 90000 seater stadiums.

Yeah fair point. Think they'll struggle to expand any further based on constraints around the ground but thats a separate discussion

Liverpool do have very high level plans for the Kenny D stand but I can’t see it ever happening. Pretty sure they’d have to buy housing at the back of the stand

This is why it would be so funny if we did extend. Historically roker was always a better ground than st James. If we extended the pressure on them would be unreal. The fact that they are snookered at hotch porch would make it even funnier. I’m not sure the Arabs will have the heart to do what is needed after this isak thing. They probably think it would be less hassle to ditch and buy a proper club. The problem they have is a proper club don’t want Arabs.

I might be proved wrong but I don’t think the Saudis have any interest in spunking 1.5bn on a new stadium. I’m not even that convinced they now even have long term plans for the mags.

I do think, however, they will spend perhaps £400m on a gallowgate extension as a goodbye (basically leaving on good terms)

Yes but the good thing about that is it costs £400m. They would have to do all sorts of stuff in the metro station and it would be a complete pain with the government involved etc. I think you are right about them losing interest. Lots of rumours flying about.

Distance learning type private “universities/colleges”, there’s thousands of em out there who need the use of places occasionally. There’s office space everywhere it’s being at a football club that hooks companies in for conferences etc.

Spurs may be up for grabs now.

They’ll use that £400m to build the hotel, cinema, casino, shopping centre ower the road from WHL more like.

Jews are not going to let the Arabs buy spurs

Aye, this is the general thoughts of most of my Newcastle supporting mates. Those with tickets love SJP and reluctant to move.

The exception is those who used to buy match by match, and who are now priced out or in this stupid membership ballot thing they have. Pay £60 a season to be in with a chance of being able to buy a ticket nonsense. They want a bigger ground to be able to go again because of all the other plastic/tourist fans that have taken up the seats they normally accessed.

FWIW, I think we're a while away from that here, but can already see a decent chunk of people who are missing out on tickets this season. Continued success over the next few years (low bar here, I'm thinking establish in Prem, pushing to outskirts of European places) and a sensible extension will be a no brainier.
Whatever happens please please make the concourses a better place to spend half time.
Fuck yeah.

No idea how or if it's possible, but creating more room would have a huge impact on matchday experience.
