Should we target a trophy next season?

I’d rather see my team win a trophy than finish 17th in the PL. We’ve all been conditioned to believe that finishing 17th is success. Of course it’s important, but give me a real success any day of the week over that.

I don't think it's a case of one or the other. Most clubs who've won a cup have rotated at some point along the way. I'm not sure how you just focus on a cup anyway, you can put your best players out, bit it doesn't mean your going to win the game.

I don't think any players who are picked go out there with an intention to lose.

Can’t believe how overboard some are going we’ve made some good signings but currently still have Onien and Patty starting in a pl team

Mate there's a generation of fans who've never seen Sunlun play in the Premier league, if we can't go a bit overboard now what's the point of it all ? The windows not shut yet and I personally wouldn't begrudge O9 or Robert's a part to play.

We're going to need some non African players and I'm sure we'll get some. This Rongiere looks like a decent DCM at a reasonable price. A cup run would be great.

Last seasons Q/F line up.
Brighton
Forrest
Bournmouth
Man CITY
Preston
Villa
Fulham
Palace.
Any reason we couldn't be involved at this stage this season?

See I can't get my head around why you would think a cup is COMPLETELY out of our grasp.

Every year I dream "we could do it", every match I think "we could get something here", and I'm of the generation THAT still thinks of an FA Cup win as incredibly important.

As an aside I remember clubs prior to the Premier League money actually resting players in the league for Cup matches even though they were in the relegation zone.

But now staying in the league is more important than any cup, we've spent a fortune on players to do that and I'm going to accept us resting players (and losing them for the AFCON) in Cup matches to concentrate on the league if we have to.

Those cups are routinely won by same teams, and if it wasn't "out of our grasp" we'd have managed more than handful of cup final appearances since 1973.

Personally I'd f***ing love a cup win - I actually remember the last one - but they way football finances work we have to channel everything (target) into staying in this league.

The way this window has gone so far and looking at how the squads progressing it 's looking like we should have a minimum of 2 very good to very decent players for each position, so the cups and AFCON will give the whole squad a chance to claim their place, so would expect everyone of them will be giving 100% to keep their spot in every game ( which should be a given anyway). Don't think I can remember ever having a squad like that in the past.

I'm almost 60 and can't remember such a thing!

It feels like cheating - is it allowed?!

I remember us at times having competition for some positions across the team compared to others - but never across the whole team.

This all feels very new.

As an old bugger, having seen us win the cup in ‘73 and play in Europe in ‘74 (though only the home leg) and having seen Aberdeen play home and away in Europe, all that I want is a couple of seasons of mid table mediocrity followed by a European spot.
I want to go away to follow sunderland in Europe while I still can.

Obviously staying up is the main priority, but I’d absolutely love us to go for a trophy and take them both seriously. Being a prem side with some big signings so far, there’s absolute no reason why with a bit of luck in the draw we can’t compete.

Obviously the FA cup would be preferable, but would settle for the Mickey Mouse trophy instead. All the big teams chucked it last season, so there’s definitely an opportunity to be had there.
No get out of the cups at the first available opportunity

Can't see the club changing its approach (especially in the first season back) to get knocked out as quickly as possible.

FA Cup is worth a crack if we got a decent draw. Free weekends until the semis so no rearranged fixtures or 'congestion' if we progressed.
The 6th round is also over Easter following the international break and we could have three weeks between matches if we are knocked out early.

I'm hearing you're odds on for the wooden spoon.
Good luck.

No mate, since our signings 90% of betting money placed on "who will be the highest placed promoted team" has been placed on us.

That puts us third bottom by my reckoning.

Bet you feel a right dickhead now eh?
