Should we target a trophy next season?

Obviously staying up is the main priority, but I’d absolutely love us to go for a trophy and take them both seriously. Being a prem side with some big signings so far, there’s absolute no reason why with a bit of luck in the draw we can’t compete.

Obviously the FA cup would be preferable, but would settle for the Mickey Mouse trophy instead. All the big teams chucked it last season, so there’s definitely an opportunity to be had there.
I think everyone needs to realise we haven’t made premier league big signings. We’ve signed a handful of hopefully excellent transfers that are on the cheap side of premier league normal. Things have changed. IF all of the signings turn out as a success we MIGHT be at the stage of competing with Palace/Wolves/Bournemouth etc. That’s the unfortunate reality of the premier league. We’ve spent nowhere near what Ipswich did so far, not that money spent is an indicator of chance.

With another 6 astute signings we could feasibly with the AFCON

The People’s Democratic Republic of Sunderland

How’s that for a nation state club

Careful you'll get mocked and accused of maggery for daring to be optimistic on here. I said we could win the league or a cup first season back the other week, if we sign 8-9 good players, and people were incredulous. Now we've signed a few people are starting to believe and I don't look so stupid anymore.

Tbf mate you do look really stupid.

Even the Carabao cup is such a hard trophy win now as all the big clubs take it seriously these days . Look at the mags , they had to beat Forest , Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool to win it . Thats three of the top 4 including the runaway league champions and the league runners up who were desperate to end their own trophy drought. The days of the likes of Swansea and Boro winning it are over . You have to be a very good team to win it these days.

"they"?

You do realise your profile has you tagged as a mag?

Any PL team is capable of winning either of the cups with a mixture of taking it seriously and favourable draws. We are a PL team now so we should be targeting winning a cup. So should the other 19 teams, though.

I cannot understand any SAFC fan who sees staying in the PL by the skin of their teeth as a marker for success. Why not stay in the PL AND win a cup. It shouldn’t be one or the other.

Maybe a parliamentary certificate for speshul achievement?

You would come unstuck in the FACup by the mighty Swindon.
Seriously would love to make the 3rd round and play you at the SOL.

Staying in the PL is the priority, if you want the club to continue the way it has been going about its business the last few weeks. I don't think any of the team selected to play in a cup game intends to lose, but one side has to.

Most clubs use their 2nd string at the start of cup campaigns, other use it to give vital game time to injured players. Arsenal were highly successful and they'd use cups to blood their young'uns through. Theres no real right or wrong way to go about it.

Well have lads on the bench in PL games, who'll likely start in cup games. I've no problem with that.

There's absolutely nowt wrong with what the opps said. Every season we should be DREAMING of a trophy. That's not saying we are getting ahead of ourselves or being arrogant . I was lucky enough to be there in 73 and what happened a few weeks ago is as close as it's came to that feeling again. Would expect every player who was involved in the playoffs will be gagging for that feeling again just as much as the fans . So bollocks to all who scoff i'm on the KLD, RLB , Speakers magic carpet ride til the end. HTL FTM.

I’d rather see my team win a trophy than finish 17th in the PL. We’ve all been conditioned to believe that finishing 17th is success. Of course it’s important, but give me a real success any day of the week over that.

OP said "target" not "dream".

I'm all for dreaming mate, we all do every season, but the notion that we should "target" something completely out of our grasp is nuts.

See how things go but given the FA cup doesnt start till January there's no reason to chuck it if we get an unexpected decent start to the season and a couple of div 1 teams forst two rounds . I know about AFCON but our second string plus development should be enough for that .
Funnily enough first thing i said leaving Wembley after the play offs was "a cup next season " , dont know why just felt right.
