The Potts and Overton situations are two entirely different cases.
Potts has been rested by ECB at Durham to ease his red ball workload but then excluded from England's red ball selection.
Overton is selected by England having played 1 red ball game in the last 2 years.
They are two entirely different scenarios but in no way contradictory
Archer having played no red ball cricket for dear knows how long and no opportunity to do so before the 2nd test.
What’s the obsession with Australia? We have a massive series against India we need to win
Woakes is huge in this series, he needs to play
Onions is a much better bowler than Potts mind, so far anyway
I will disagree with the last line. He lost loads of weight and got himself fit but he still couldn’t last a full test match. I don’t think it’s just down to effort he might not be built for it
so I am sort of agreeing you. Can’t pick players who can’t bowl 3rd and 4th spells and can’t last a test match
I’ve said this for a year now he should be in our white ball squads. He’s perfect for it.
They are picking the squad with Australia in mind IMO, which is why I'd question including Woakes and Cook. Woakes has a great record at home so I get picking him as a horses for courses selection in England, but in Australia I see him doing very little. I guess what I am trying to say is that I think they are picking a squad for now almost by who they want in Australia.
sorry but we have 5 tests against India, this is a huge huge series. You have to pick for that. Woakes is a gun at home needs to play.
I am not disagreeing, I think they are picking for Australia and IF that is the case I'd be concerned about Woakes and some others but I am second guessing them.
I don’t think Woakes will open the bowling in Australia myself But will in this series
Which would probably be the right call IMO. I think Potts will offer more than Woakes over there and as a result you would hope to see him involved in this series at some point.
I do wonder how many bowlers they are going to take, given that at the moment the following are in or expected to return to the squad.
Potts
Carse
Cook
Woakes
Atkinson
Tongue
Archer
Wood
Overton
Bashir
Back-up spinner
I think a fit Hull will come under consideration too.
They might need two separate flights to Oz at this rate![]()
But they select Overton who is in far greater need for some red ball practise.Potts would be in the squad if he didn’t need cricket like. Hes been let go to get some cricket essentially
In air ambulances. They might need two separate flights to Oz at this rate![]()
Haha yeah thought the exact same thing
I reckon Hull will go like
Wonder if they have some lads out their playing big bash or lions or someit
But they select Overton who is in far greater need for some red ball practise.
I've no problem with Potts omission -don't think he's been anywhere near his top form this season
In air ambulances.
I also have a feeling Hull will go. I think Potts and Cook will miss out, and Archer won't be fit. No doubt someone else will come down with an injury before then too but I see them taking a squad of 18, bowler heavy.
Crawley
Duckett
Pope
Root
Brook
Stokes
Smith
Bethell
Stokes
Dawson
Carse
Atkinson
Bashir
Hull
Woakes
Overton
Wood
Tongue
Maybe yeah but he’s probably not a bowler who you want grinding it out in test cricket
I reckon Hull would have been in but he’s got a niggle
Sounds like he’s bowling quicker.
Leach will go 2nd spinner. You might not be fat off
Let’s wait and see on archer he’s not been injured for ages now. Like I mean proper injured, think he just broke a finger or someit didn’t he
Archer would be huge like as he’s just accurate.
Overton man just because he can bat not good enough with ball. Woakes is rusty as and as good as is here is there any point when he will never play an away test again?
Just think if they go quite bowler heavy, they might want Dawson for his batting as he could bat top 7 if needed if one of those fall injured or have a dodgy series. They are clearly desperate for Archer to go but it's a huge ask IMO - he hasn't played a FC game for over 4 years. He might get through a couple of tests and alternate with Wood at best but unless I see him play 2/3 tests this summer, I'll have reservations about him being in the squad.
I would normally agree but the fact that Stokes and McCullum not picking him when it seems a straightforward pick.Ollie Robinson seems fit and firing. Almost like managing peoples workloads and stopping them playing is what might be causing these injuries to our fast bowlers.
See this post yesterday from @The Breen Machine discussing just that Gus Atkinson
I don't really care he's a tit and probably ignored all the management. His record for England was excellent and not many England bowlers have walked away from Aus in the last 15 years with a sub 26 bowling average.
Pick your best XI and for me he's like McGrath in his bowling style albeit not as fast.
Yes,he's ostracized. Obviously,Robinson and his influencer's behaviour on his last tour have burnt his boats. His clashes with authority at his many clubs tells you a lot.I am genuinely puzzled what the selectors see in Overton mind.
Cricket all about opinions but would have him no where near the test side.
I would normally agree but the fact that Stokes and McCullum not picking him when it seems a straightforward pick.
Tells me something
Normally chilly day at Riverside should finish any 2nd test aspirations. They hope to play Archer against Durham
