Eng vs India - First Test - 20th-24th June

Potts isn’t gonna play though and you just moaned about him not getting any cricket?
Can’t have it both ways
Nah I'm moaning about them stringing Potts along. He's played 4/7 red balls games for us and for what to carry drinks.

As you say him being 12th man is a waste of his time. No complaints about them wanting to look at Overton again.

They need someone with pace for the Ashes and he's the next fit cab. Even though Aussie pitches last year weren't like pitches our last 3 times there.

Read my post above though wasn’t a plan. Someone either got injured or niggle everytime he was about to be released.

Frustrating for the lad for sure

Yeah Overton won’t play they’ll see what he’s made of in the nets

The bowling is an issue like for sure. Theres nobody I can think of really who should be in the squad but is not getting ago
Pretty much the same. Swap Smith and Stokes though

Am at the 1st 2 days of this test, cannot wait...

Jealous will be mint.

Crawley
Duckett
Pope
Root
Brook
Smith
Stokes
Woakes
Carse
Tongue
Bashir

Would be my team

Bethell needs some cricket. He’s not gonna open and pope deserves ago for me
Wasn’t impressed at All by cook

Surprised he’s still in squad
Aye that’ll be the team as well I reckon.

Cook looked miles away from being a test match player against Zimbabwe and he can’t hold a bat so you’d end up with three genuine number 11s if he plays.

Agreed. We've had this plan of a battery of fast bowlers and as it stands, all of them are injured (apart from Carse)

Not been massively impressed with Atkinson either lately tbh.

I don’t wanna be harsh on the lad, only 1 game but he looked way short like on pitches where you need a bit more bounce.

Ollie Robinson seems fit and firing. Almost like managing peoples workloads and stopping them playing is what might be causing these injuries to our fast bowlers.

See this post yesterday from @The Breen Machine discussing just that Gus Atkinson

I don't really care he's a tit and probably ignored all the management. His record for England was excellent and not many England bowlers have walked away from Aus in the last 15 years with a sub 26 bowling average.

Pick your best XI and for me he's like McGrath in his bowling style albeit not as fast.

I honestly think that average was a bit misleading mind in Oz, he couldnt bowl long spells and ended up bowling off spin

In the last 3 big series he played he had back spasms early in the games and England had to play the rest of the test a bowler down

You can’t pick him like sorry as you can’t trust him to last 5 days.

Potts is the new Graham Onions. What a waste of the last month for him, seems to be the easy fall guy at the moment.

Cook should have been the one to make way, whilst 1 test doesn't seem like a fair chance, he didn't look the part and the others are better options. I am not sure on Overton, but he's another hit the deck hard bowler which they seem to want plenty of in Australia. My view is that you don't need him and Carse in the same team and Potts is likely to out perform Woakes in Australia.

8. Carse
9. Atkinson
10. Potts
11. Spinner - which will be Bashir

That is the bowling line-up I would go for leading into the Ashes if all are fit and on the basis Tongue/Overton don't pull up trees in this series.

Bethell in for Pope for me. Would be bold given Pope's big score, he cashes in against the poorer sides, which is a skill in itself, but I never find him convincing against the higher quality attacks

Potts was not gonna play this game so may as well at least release him

My own view is that Tongue will go better than Potts

Never worried about England getting runs, that batting lineup is prolific if occasionally fragile.

But dear me that bowling attack is worrying. Happy enough with Carse though he's only been capped five times. Woakes is reliable but is now 36. The rest of it screams experimental to me. Not enough quality, pace, or experience. Not to face India.

Looks like they are searching the counties for bowlers with that extra yard of pace for the Ashes series. Even though we have got this series against India the Ashes especially in Aussie is always top of the agenda.

I just feel for him that he's been left out again and he's missed a fair bit of cricket lately to carry the drinks. Whilst he wasn't at his best at the start of this season, he's now fallen behind Cook and has been left out of this squad which now includes 3 bowlers with only 1 CC appearance each this season, 2 of whom are known to be a little injury prone.

I really see Woakes doing nothing in Australia and Potts being the better option as the opening seam bowler. I think Tongue will do OK over there but he looked quite poor in the Zimbabwe test so I am less convinced than I was. Either way, the bowling attack does look like they don't know what their best line-up is and are throwing things around to see what sticks, I think they might be focusing too much on back of a length, hit the deck hard bowlers for the Ashes too where the pitches have changed a bit and some variety won't do any harm.

Yes fair points but he wasn’t going to play this game? They know he needs cricket so he has been released to play. That’s the way I see it

No point him carrying the drinks again

I think he will go to Australia

Stokes loves Potts, he’s took him under his wing, I trust his judgement if he feels he’s not the main right now.

I'd be questioning why he didn't play the Zimbabwe test and why he's not playing this one. I get the need for looking at others but Cook and Woakes are going to do nothing in Australia, and Overton I am not so sure on. It feels like he is getting somewhat of a raw deal at the moment and he and Durham have suffered in the last month for it.

Really feels reminiscent of Onions a bit where he seemed to be in and around plenty squads, but hardly ever picked. There was at least good reason at that time though, in that we had Anderson and Broad. This is all a bit experimental going into a big series against India.

What’s the obsession with Australia? We have a massive series against India we need to win

Woakes is huge in this series, he needs to play

Onions is a much better bowler than Potts mind, so far anyway
I’m not having Robinson sorry.

Super bowler when fit. But he clearly doesn’t care enough to be as good as he can be

I will disagree with the last line. He lost loads of weight and got himself fit but he still couldn’t last a full test match. I don’t think it’s just down to effort he might not be built for it

so I am sort of agreeing you. Can’t pick players who can’t bowl 3rd and 4th spells and can’t last a test match

I’ve said this for a year now he should be in our white ball squads. He’s perfect for it.

The Potts and Overton situations are two entirely different cases.
Potts has been rested by ECB at Durham to ease his red ball workload but then excluded from England's red ball selection.
Overton is selected by England having played 1 red ball game in the last 2 years.
They are two entirely different scenarios but in no way contradictory
On Sky Sports that Archer could be available for the second Test and they hope Mark Wood could make Tests 4 and 5.
Archer having played no red ball cricket for dear knows how long and no opportunity to do so before the 2nd test.
