Jordan Henderson (signed for Brentford)

It's a shame he went to Saudi for me as that's tarnished his reputation and for that reason I'm not on board if I'm honest but I can see he'd be a good acquisition

The more I think about this the more sense it makes.

Ha'way Jordan lad.

His experience could be vital when we have such a young team.

When you look at what he has won and the number of games he has played for some top clubs, if there is any possibility of bringing him home we should be all over it.

It would make a great story and be a big boost for everyone involved with Sunderland.

Tbh I'm not fussed .If it's to give him another payday definitely not.But if it was genuine and he d take a massive paycut it's a maybe

I don't usually comment on football matters on here (as I'm a mag) .... I'm only really interested in the political discussion not footie .

But I'll say this :-

I've been a Newcastle supporter since I was a nipper, when I used to squeeze in free with my late old man - I used to stand on the old Leazes End as a 12 year old with my mates , ...and I followed the team around the country as a teenager ( when we were absolutely dreadful)

So, I supported the team through thick & thin. Not the ownership - and nothing will ever change that.

You won't find any statements from me in favour of PIF part-ownership ( or Ashley or John Hall for that matter ).

A football team / club belongs to its fans - not ( apart from in a strictly financial sense ) - to the latest transient owners.

But we can find several statements from Henderson about supporting LBG (... and we can see him wearing rainbow 🌈 coloured laces ffs ).

For him to ignore that past - and go play in Saudi makes him a hypercrit imho.

And now he gets a "yes " from you ?

Given all you've said 🤔
So to summarize.

You're saying it's fine for the mags to have Saudi owners. But not for Jordan to go and play there?

WHAT! Ripping your club off, squeezing in for free. No wonder they've never had any cash to win a trophy for 70 years till the money laundering Saudis showed up.
They used to allow 2 kids to squeeze together through the paddock turnstiles back in 70s .

Happy days
Wait. So you're allowed to say "I just support the club not the owners" and that gives you a pass

But if Henderson signs for Sunderland, the fans' ethics are compromised. They're not allowed to just support their club Is that right?

Even though we all saw the Celebrations for the takeover with the towels on head, the national team playing at your stadium and the frequent visits to Saudi. Keith downie crying in tv.

My point was that we are all only responsible for our own words or actions

I know what mine were
I know what Hendersons were.
And I know what @Keith S30S 's were

Glass houses & stones comes to mind

I NEVER said that supporters were responsible for owners

I've made my point now - and That's the last you'll see of me on a footie thread 🙂

Good post (for a mag 😉). This sort of thing will always divide opinion. I personally have no issue with the club signing Henderson for the right reasons, ie, he takes the necessary pay cut and genuinely wants to be part of the rejuvenation of the club. He’s already admitted he made a huge error with the Saudi thing (whatever the reasons). I can also say, without a shadow of doubt that the day Sunderland sold out to a regime would be the last time I even uttered their name. I would rather watch the club play in L2 or lower.

I’m old enough to remember when a lot of lads went to both Sunderland and Newcastle, and I did to a small degree. My mates were mags and I went for the crack on a Saturday when I couldn’t go away to watch Sunderland. They were, like you, die hards. To a man not one of them go now. Several reasons probably, mostly that football in the PL is fucked due to money. But certainly at least in part due to the owners of NUFC. Think a lot of the old timers feel the same. Sunderland still feels like a family club, the Durham club. If that ceases to be then a lot wil lose interest.

I would love Henderson to come back but we can’t deny the fact that going to Saudi wasn’t a good look and a bit of a hypocritical move by him.
Not fussed about Henderson for the reasons you've mentioned and I know plenty of folk who are a definite no on that subject. I acknowledged that he would be a good signing for us, even if only for one season. He could really help Chris Rigg and Dan Neil, if Dan Neil is still our player. Fingers crossed we don't get carried away in the transfer market and stick to the model acquiring the right characters along with the manager's needs.

I agree it was both hypocritical and greedy for him to go to Saudi. I didn't agree with it. But he turned his back on them after a few months. He made a mistake, I will give him the benefit of doubt for undoing his mistake quickly.

Before he went to Saudi, Henderson coming home would be real returning hero stuff. Someone you'd like to see stay on at the club after hanging up his boots.

Now it's purely transactional - he's probably got another season in his legs, and he'd do a job.

His move to Saudi was morally bankrupt, and it also showed incredibly poor judgement. The bloke is thick as mince. There's enough water under the bridge for us to sign him without any qualms, but there's enough of a black mark on his name for us to bin him off the minute he's no longer useful.

And just to point out the obvious - mags attempting to paint this as an equivalent to their situation is absolutely pathetic. Henderson made - then unmade - a decision to contribute to the PR spin of a despotic regime. If we buy the player we don't somehow own that decision. The Newcastle United fanbase used to stage a protest at the smallest possible grievance. Their decision to now keep their bedsheets and striped coffins in storage is an ongoing act of moral cowardice, all in hope of being within smelling distance of the filthiest money on planet earth. They can get to fuck.
