Elland road upgrade

Talking of narratives here we go..........

In modern history the ground capacity hasn't exceeded 40000 is probably why (currently 37500) it held briefly 40000 before Ken Bates put his executive boxes in, but then you're subject to away attendance.

Prior to Don Revies era, Leeds was not a footballing heartland, nor were many towns along the M62 corridor.

Why didn't Sunderland achieve an average home attendance of above 20000 through the decades of the 80s and 90s?

Edit to say - it also seems your current attendances are skewed too, lots of people not turning up it seems, and issues with adults buying kids season tickets, then not being arsed to turn up as it didn't cost them much anyway.
The play off attendance will be interesting when people have to pay full whack - but even then it should be a sell out for such an important game.

It seems you have an unhealthy obsession up there with attendances holding up to your neighbours levels, local pride - I get it.
Elland Rd capacity was more than 40k during the Revie era.

The narrative is Leeds have shit support and Sunderland are the attendance champions of the world.

You can't get anymore in the ground than the current capacity allows, and it has been this way for a number of seasons now.

There is also 26000 on the season ticket waiting list, the club has been held back for years regarding ground updates, a long list of dodgy owners put paid to that.

The FA cup third round for example was a sell out, what was your attendance again?
Another sad mag wanker. Or perhaps a Leeds wanker. Maybe @Pearce. Either way someone who's just registered or re registered for a fans message board of a club he doesn't support.

Just bore off man.

Of course it won't, there record attendance is 53 thousand!!!
57000 record crowd in 1967, FA Cup replay I was there. Over 20k from Sunderland . They very rarely got anywhere near 40,000 . Next replay at Hull City’s Boothferry Park which was famous for Sunderland invasions. Cheating Revie got away with murder that night which caused uproar and pandemonium amongst Sunderland Supporters.

You had plenty of one off crowds above 40,000 and even into the 50ks between the 50s and 90s, just never an average over a season.

Over 20,000 on the season ticket waiting list, will probably generate another half a million pound a game. Them and Villa upgrading their stadium and capacity, rumours Birmingham want to do it, we are in danger of falling behind to these teams we’ve historically competed with.
Ten years out of the PL has definitely seen us fall back imo.

Our attendances are class, obviously, but that’s in a time when football attendances have grown across the board in that period. All over the shop teams are selling out their stadiums that never used to. And due to our mismanagement (and potentially the Saudis?) we’ve not really grown, just stayed the same.

Our Ground was built for an eventual expansion to 63,000.
It was a response to somebody saying that the Stadium of Light could easily be expanded.
I don't think an expansion will ever be needed.
The only chance that ours went up to 63k was as part of the failed World Cup bid.

Article I read earlier said 25k on wait list and every home game sold out for last 6 seasons.
37k when the team is either top of the Championship or in the PL isn't difficult.
It was a completely different time, but again...... how are you supposed to average higher than your ground capacity allows????

So your crowds were down because you were "crap"?

Isn't that the definition of fickle?
Just had a look at Leeds average attendance of the past 25 years. I wouldn't call other fans fickle if I were you.

It would if we ever had a consistently successful team over a long period of time.In recent times since winning the FA Cup in 73 Sunderland have failed to build on the playing front. As soon as we have a nucleus of any quality players they are sold and we regress due to poor replacements. The lack of real investment by owners over the years and constant changing of head coaches / managers has exacerbated the situation. For some reason the club never gets the positive press that other clubs receive and in the past decade or so from TV pundits and Sky in particular. The negativity surrounding the City and our lack of real success in recent times has made our attendances remarkable.
Our away attendances are second to none.
I hope that the changing landscape and infrastructure in the City centre and Sheepfolds area brings new life to Sunderland City and the Port and makes it a place people want to move to.Major regeneration is heading in the right direction and more should be made of the sea front and our green belt. I’m sure this will have a positive impact on the club because as history has shown, a successful team has meant a boost to the local workplaces and economy of the City.
I just hope that I live long enough to see Sunderland back where it belongs in the top flight, a return to a fantastic atmosphere and financial security with a team to be proud of and the great potential realised.
It will be then worth having an extended SOL.
