Elland road upgrade

Talking of narratives here we go..........

In modern history the ground capacity hasn't exceeded 40000 is probably why (currently 37500) it held briefly 40000 before Ken Bates put his executive boxes in, but then you're subject to away attendance.

Prior to Don Revies era, Leeds was not a footballing heartland, nor were many towns along the M62 corridor.

Why didn't Sunderland achieve an average home attendance of above 20000 through the decades of the 80s and 90s?

Edit to say - it also seems your current attendances are skewed too, lots of people not turning up it seems, and issues with adults buying kids season tickets, then not being arsed to turn up as it didn't cost them much anyway.
The play off attendance will be interesting when people have to pay full whack - but even then it should be a sell out for such an important game.

It seems you have an unhealthy obsession up there with attendances holding up to your neighbours levels, local pride - I get it.
For someone who has claimed that they’re not obsessed with attendances it’s pretty much all you’ve gone on about.

And I do like how that video avoids showing the south stand! Is going to very lopsided.
I don't know why they didn't move the stand opposite back into the car park behind when they redeveloped it.

It would have given them much more room on the other side to redevelop the south stand.

Wolves did something similar when they built the Steve Bull stand but then unfortunately went bust and were stuck with a stand a mile away from the pitch for years.
Some grounds just need knocking down and rebuilt, Leeds is one of them.
Palace is another.

They've got similar plans in place for a lop-sided upgrade.

I suspect that would have made things significantly more expensive as they'd have to have done something with their east stand.

It was a completely different time, but again...... how are you supposed to average higher than your ground capacity allows????

So your crowds were down because you were "crap"?

Isn't that the definition of fickle?
IF you are indeed a Lerds fan, why didn’t you answer my question as to why YOU didn’t go the entire decade prior to Bielsa arriving?
Answer that then read what you’ve just written above.

Aye the Wolves one was weird. I was at a Sunderland game there in the early 90s when there were only two stands left: the terrace we were in shared with the home fans, and the “new” stand which seemed like a football pitch away from the touchline.

Chelsea nearly went bust in similar fashion when they built a big stand around the same time as Wolves. It was probably the factor putting off other clubs from modernising stadia which ultimately led to Hillsborough and Bradford tragedies.

37k when the team is either top of the Championship or in the PL isn't difficult.

Just had a look at Leeds average attendance of the past 25 years. I wouldn't call other fans fickle if I were you.
I didn’t say it was!!
All I stated was the article I read said they had sold out home games for years and had 20k waiting for Season Tickets.
For Clarity : I have made no attempt to verify if these claims are accurate.

The location of Elland Road makes it a right ballache to get to and from the city centre, especially if you have a train to catch straight after full time so adding an extra 20k seats and not improving transport links isn't going to help.

Interesting to read some of the comments on here. A couple of quick points

1. Very difficult to retrofit an existing stadium without significant impact on match day revenues

2. ER has an excellent location in comparison to most top clubs. If SFC fans are honest RP was probably a much more desirable location than the SOL where fans leave 10 mins before the end of the game due to transport links. Most Leeds fans stay for the entire game

3. Attendances are just an argument that is total bollox with many factors involved. Bates had us paying PL prices with no concessions when we were in L1 watching absolute toss. If SFC doubled prices it would be interesting to see what would happen to your attendances

4. Although we’re a one club city, the region is also a hotbed for rugby and cricket which does impact. There are also multiple other clubs within an hours drive and I include the Manchester and Sheffield filth in that. You guys only really have Newcastle and Boro. Amongst those 3 clubs you are likely #3 possible #2. In other words whilst Newcastle = Leeds
Sunderland / Boro = Huddersfield / Halifax

Probably the best way to describe it as Newcastle would be way bigger if it were not for the smaller clubs like yourself never mind having 3/4 potential giants within a short drive

Yep. Biggest city in Europe without a tram or metro. Would imagine they will add a rail stop by the ground.

That's absolute nonsense.

I'm a Newcastle supporter and there is absolutely no argument to say that Boro are a "bigger" club than SAFC. By whatever metric that stupid thing is measured by, revenue, attendances, history, whatever.

Everyone in the NE knows that Boro are #3 in the region. Even Boro fans would say it.
