Getting promoted - do we actually want it?

We need to get into the Premier league soon and try to stay there as it's looking increasingly likely that it'll become a closed shop in the near future unfortunately 😕

If by some miracle we went up we have to spend the entire 150m rights windfall to have even a sniff of a chance of staying up.
There's nobody in the team that'd get into a mid table premier league team. Who plays for us at the moment that stuck out as much as Clarke did? And how did he fare at Ipswich?
I think Mundle, Isidor and Mayenda would be OK because of their pace/directness. Le Fee and Mepham (if signed) would be OK too in all probability, The young ones like Bellingham, Rigg, Hume, Ballard, Cirkin, Patterson and Neil could possibly make the step - there's reportedly enough interest from PL clubs to suggest I'm not alone in thinking that. I would caveat that with they would probably not all be starting games at the same time.

Clarke I feel a bit sorry for, he was a shining light for us but he's playing in a totally different position for Ipswich - more inside left than LW and he's got no space to do his best work.

I don't think we have a terrible squad but it will need seriously strengthening (and using) as there's no way we would get away with playing the same team week after week. As I said on another thread yesterday I think we need more physicality/pace in the squad, and if we go up obviously players with PL/International experience.

Watching the Premier highlights and seeing Ipswich put up no fight against the Mags, I’m not sure how we go from getting turned over by Oxford and Blackburn to competing with established Premier League teams in a couple of months.

This team has some talent but it is miles off being able to compete in the PL. I honestly wouldn’t mind another season in this league and letting the young players develop and hopefully continue to improve.

I’m not sure I would enjoy a season of getting battered like Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton have had. Maybe these last few weeks are just sucking the life/positivity out of me.
Turned over by Blackburn.

Honestly man do folk even watch games. They had 2 shots, 1 was blocked and 1 went in.

Going up would be a massive struggle, but you have to want to be promoted. That's the whole point of a pyramid system.

Of course I want to go up but if don't this season then it won't be a disaster. Just dust ourselves off and do it all again.

Just imagine what this place will be like getting stuffed every week in the Premier League.

If we have the chance to go up, try and take it. No guarantee next season is going to suddenly be easier or built better for a return. It's a load of crap this having to be ready for promotion. No team is now so it's completely redundant

We're currently getting 'stuffed every week' in the second division and plenty are applauding it.
So there'll be no change really.

Was just curious if anyone knew if it was in the rules that you could turn down promotion, maybe as a protest perhaps.
I think technically what happens is winning promotion gives you the right to resign from the football league and apply to join the premier league. So I think you technically could just not exercise your right. I think it often happens at Northern League level where clubs don't want to progress up the ladder due to the increased cost of travel.

I'd love someone to do it to make the valid point that it's no longer a fair sporting contest. But would it make a difference? Very much doubt it.

Being honest I have no interest in the premier league, can't stand the VAR, can't stand the disparity in funding the closed shop, can't ever come to terms with watching players earning more a week than I do in a year who don't give a toss about the club and would rather be based in London/Manchester, don't like the coverage and we'll lose players like Jobe and Rigg regardless of being promoted.

But do I want us to get promoted this season. Absolutely yes. You simply have to join the gravy train (to even be able to compete at the top of the Championship) for the club to grow and I think a club of our stature and history should be competing at the highest level. Will I enjoy it? Almost certainly not but there's always watching the youth teams for seeing a true sporting contest while the first team scrapes around the bottom three all season.

Yes Sunderland should want it. Demand it. Grasp it.
Never EVER put off till tomorrow what you can achieve today…tomorrow may never come.
And often it doesn’t.
It’s a life lesson that covers more than football.

Good post thanks.👍

Unfortunately no the players don’t want it it’s as clear as night and day, thankfully we’ll not be up there to make up the numbers anyway next season 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’ve honestly got mixed feelings on it. I think we would be embarrassed every week. We have been dire for months in a relatively poor division. However the longer it is before or if we ever go up the harder it will be to stay there. If the money was going to be invested in a serious attempt to stay up then great but I fear it will be like now, a number of signings who just aren’t good enough. Everyone wants to be in the top division but not to get humiliated every week.

.
What would be deemed successful for next season without calls for RLB to be sacked? Some will want him out even if we do go up.

If Sunderland aren't promoted then I would hope he would be gone.
Depends on other factors, not least ownership.

If Daniel Farke is his replacement then I could accept that as an upgrade but I wouldn't want to see him sacked just for the sake of it and replaced with another Championship plodder.

We are currently 4th and having an unbelievable season when you remember we finished 16th last year. Yet complete dodgeballs on here want the coach sacked

Promoted. Hammered every week. Relegated.
That’s the worst that can happen. Not fun I am sure but the financial impact, provided you don’t go mad, could change things massively.
Look at Forest. Be shit all season and somehow scrape 17th. That’s all you need. Well that and sensible recruitment.
To be fair, Ipswich were all over the mags until the ref and VAR decided things weren’t going to plan and gave every decision to Newcastle.
Give over man!

Imagine thinking our youngsters are going to stay here, they are gone as soon as a solid offer comes in for them. We need to get up there ASAP and invest the money to stay up, it's the only option.

If we don't go up this season we will lose about 5 players and it will be back to square one. These owners will spend about a tenth of the received fees on replacements.
