Keel Crossing [opened 18.10.25] - compendium thread

When it was first mentioned I wasn't that bothered as I thought it was nearer to St Mary's but as it has started taking shape I've become its number one cheerleader.
The drone was bought for a totally different purpose but this is where at least 50% of my drone flying takes place.
Walked over to the Sheepfolds earlier and was mumbling to myself about what an effort it was to walk over the Wearmouth Bridge. Still only 25 minutes from my house to Propa but knocking ten minutes off that will make all the difference.
Ahem, probably top 5 but let's not get carried away.

I'm pathetically excited by this bridge mind. It really is unbelievable that something of this scale is being built in Sunderland, it's so, so difficult to get anything like this built. It's going to be transformational. Can't wait for it to open!

Really grateful to @yamar1 and @RestlessNatives for the regular drone shots. It's history in the making and brilliant to see it all documented in HD.
I was just thinking the other day would anyone other than us stupidly passionate supporters or even residents of another town / city anywhere in the world get as excited as us about a fkn bridge 😂

I’m dead excited btw 😎

Does anyone know if you can get to the Sheepfolds Stables from the south west side of the stadium directly at the moment? Or is it blocked off still?

Excellent that.

I've finally got round to getting a mini 4 pro. Going to have to make a trip up to have a go once I learn to fly a bit more!
I have an odd fascination with bridges - was in Sunderland last month and looked across to the new bridge in construction as I walked across to town and was gutted it wasn't open for me to wander across it. Looked impressive mind, next time I am back hopefully be sorted.
I've built a few motorway bridges in the past but would love to do something like that.

Night matches with the bridge lit up red and white. Game on TV so footage of the bridge. Man, that's going to be absolutely class. We really need to get back where we should be in the Premier.

Still dying to find out what the plan is for restoring the cycle path under the bridge.
Check out the following on the Sunderland planning portal.
Landscaping on both sides of the river around the new bridge is covered in 24/02438/DIS, includes loads of plans.
Smaller one covers the subway area, 25/00123/DIS
More niche ones are to do with remediation and reuse of spoil on site, fascinating reading 24/02446/DIS and the archaeology of the site is included in 25/00126/DIS.
So much work goes into producing these reports and demonstrates how difficult it is to develop brownfield sites.
Clearly all of this hard work and expense is going to produce a fantastic bridge which will be surrounded by very impressive, restored and accessible natural features.

@RestlessNatives sure I noticed the railings starting to be installed on your twitter photos yesterday? get any drone footage to post?

*I could have checked while at the match like!
I have but I need to get round to editing. I'll have a quick look to see if I can spot anything. I did a top down over it yesterday so should spot anything obvious.
Not the greatest photo as just a screenshot off the video but there is the beginnings of some sort of railings.

Nice one - as @ShoutyBearHead says you can see them going up, they have the red/white bollards set back for safe walkway where the next rows are going in

Construction on the New Wear Footbridge is progressing well, with another key activity now underway. Following the successful completion of the deck, the temporary works have been removed and installation of the bridge’s bespoke parapet system has begun.

Made from stainless steel, the parapets will form the handrails and safety barriers, while also incorporating integrated lighting to enhance both safety and visual impact.

While the parapet system is a significant element of the structure, a substantial programme of work remains. This includes the installation of the waterproofing layer, followed by the paving, deck furniture, and internal bridge drainage – each requiring coordination between specialist teams.

Elsewhere on site, groundworks around the substructures are ongoing, and M&E sub-contractor Opus has mobilised to begin installation of the bridge lighting and electrical systems.

The bridge is part of Sunderland’s ambitious Riverside Sunderland regeneration, and will ultimately improve connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists between the city centre and the Sheepfolds neighbourhood.

The landscaping on the cgi of the parks around the city centre and north side look fantastic- hopefully it is that work as it will really finish the area off superbly

Railings deffo started going up on the Sheepfolds side.

About 5ft high. If you jump over them you'll gan straight in the river or on the banks. There's nee parapet to sit on til someone comes and talks you out of it.
It's that wide it'll barely feel like walking over a bridge. Can't wait. 😎

Can we start imagining an opening ceremony yet? I’m thinking of something like when the Channel Tunnel opened and the tunnellers from each country met in the middle. We could have a ceremonial walk from both sides with representatives of the five spheres of Sunderland life (Music, Politics, Football, Beer and Pies), all meeting in the middle. Brings a tear to the eye.

A well-to-do Northsider offering the hand of friendship to a poor downtrodden Southsider.
