Tommy Watson ( ...off to Brighton)

He needs to become financially secure.
Sure, that could happen eventually if he stays. But what happens if he gets a serious injury? Look at Ross Stewart. If he can get money that sets him up for life then he should be taking it.
All down to mentality I guess. I wish I was playing for Sunderland

12m plus that other lad on loan seems like a very good deal for an injured 18 year old who’s played less than a handful of games.

Remember when Watmore and Maclean looked mint when they burst onto the scene? Where are they now? I’d take the money and put it towards the finished article vs gambling

Not if he has Elliot Embleton style luck. A couple of bad injuries and he could end up in league 2 at 24 having made very little.
Life is a gamble though, the only constant is change. What can you do about it. Nothing really just try to better yourself. I don’t think embleton was going to be that good however. Wasn’t really bothered when he moved on. This new crop however are different I think.
It seems he's being sold at the good player price...so we're getting the money ahead of time.
Only time will tell. You don’t know what is a good price for this lad.

Some people describing him as 'squad filler' honestly speaking. He's a tremendous player and I know all of the posters on here that have followed him through the levels will know we are losing a fantastic young player if indeed he goes. He just has tons of final product and thats what team want. For those that point out hes only played a handful of games wellt aht is only down to being 18 and also being injured. Hes tremendous. I realise that there are allsorts of moving parts when a player leaves, length of contract and whether we are already strong in those areas but for me seeing lads coming through the ranks, playing for Sunderland and performing at a high level is one of the biggest positives of watching us. I hope he stays.

Guesswork.

Currently the lad is unproven. 12m and a sell on clause is a fair deal

I think young players have different ideas of progress.

TW is taking the Jack Clarke route of a move to a PL club very early. He has no chance of playing much first team football but will get a massive contract. I can see the reasoning, I’m a fairly anxious person and I’d probably be thinking “I could do my ACL tomorrow, and never get a decent wage again if I turn this down”.

Others, like Jobe and Rigg, are prioritizing game time at a good level and being patient about when to make a big move. Maybe they’re less worried about “what if?” And have a plan they trust to work for them.

You need to look after yourself because nobody else will. Business, football and life are ruthless.

Course it’s a gamble, but I won’t begrudge the lad setting himself up for life when he can’t even be guaranteed minutes here.

Be better placed taking Henderson and pickfords trajectory of regular game time first before moving, not the greenwood, hugill etc route

Yes but that’s because to you and I that is a pipe dream that would radically improve our lives (no offence but assuming you like me don’t earn more than 250k a year). Once you get there and are looking to build a career a 5 year contract on a couple of million a year will set you up for life regardless if you don’t even make the grade as a player

At this moment thats exactly what he is. Mundle is the man in possession when fit so his chances will come as a sub or when injuries resurface. We cant be guaranteeing him anything and whilst he may end up being a fantastic footballer, at the minute he is squad filler. He will also be squad filler at Brighton

Jobe and Rigg will be on a lot more than watson has been offered by us. I'm not saying they couldn't get more money but I think Jones current contract will have him in a very good position in life if not financially secure.
