Tommy Watson ( ...off to Brighton)

So on the one hand I don't mind if we sell. He's been an unexpected bright spot, but he's a handful of games into his career. If we get money that helps us now, we basically de-risk on a player who may end up being world-beating, but may also not. Ultimately it's about whether there's a plan for what comes afterwards.

But

He's played less than 15 pro games. There is no way we'll get anywhere near that for him.

I think we'd be mad to sell him- but what they are offering will be a lot closer to 3 million than 15. Likely less than 3.

15 million bought the best left winger in the division a few months ago

This is apples and oranges. Clarke is much older in football years, and the degree of scepticism about how he'd pan out in the PL was based on prior experience for other clubs, but if you want to compare the two players, it's much closer to Tottenham buying 3rd place in Championship Leeds United's 18yr old winger Jack Clarke for £10m back in 2019 - oh, and they then loaned him back for the next season.

With inflation, plus the Winter transfer premium, I'd suggest somewhere between £10-15m isn't inconceivable depending on how they rate him.

Watson and Rigg have staggeringly high levels of potential

If you can't see that then I suggest you try a different sport

Watson is athletic, powerful, quick, positive, two footed. His decision making is really good for such a young winger. He's 18 years old

He's not powerful. His decision making is questionable. Is he that quick? Is he even two footed? I can't really remember... He's played about three games of second tier football.

The lad's said our most valuable player "EVER" though. I think that's a bit silly.

We just need to keep our nerve for the next few days, and maybe bring in that versatile forward RlB wants. The club does not need to sell anybody.
All this stuff about our young talent refusing to sign contacts is pure knicker-wetting. We don't know what division we will be in next season, so May is the time to think about the future squad.

I wish the Barrow-Boys had had the balls to say to Maja, "Just keep hitting back of the net, (in his case), and you can ask someone for a huge signing on fee in the summer, or else sign for us in a higher league for much more money." A variation on this should be the response to any player who is genuinely unsettled. I don't think Neil or Watson is, incidentally, and they are both under contract until the end of next season anyway.

So less than the bid we already turned down in the summer? That would be a novel approach to negotiations I suppose.
I'm extremely skeptical that they actually offered that much in the summer. Nor do I see why they'd increase their bid significantly now. Nothing has really changed, other than he had a few appearances and did well, he's also injured now and the contract is running down. I don't see why they'd offer more.

Bag a decent fee and it's hardly the end of the world.
If he wants to leave then the argument is over! Ideally it’s a decent fee and a high %age of future profit which covers the issue of his career potential. If he was ever top class then he’d leave at some point anyway.

Yeah I agree. Unless the player has absolutely decided he's off, and them it's about getting the best deal possible.

But in our situation, getting 5-9m for Watson isn't going to do much for us right now. We're in a promotion race, and he'll be worth more money in the summer (despite his contract) if he plays a starring role in getting us promoted. If we get promoted he may well stay anyway.

Unless he's absolutely determined to go (or the offer is something truly ridiculous), it would be a hard no from me.
Yes I agree with this too.
You would really hope he can see the bigger picture though and would want to play a part in an exciting promotion campaign in which his reputation (and value) can only be enhanced.

I would usually be well against this but, if he only has 18 months left and doesn’t look likely to sign, we’d get a fair bit less in the summer or next January.
All depends on whether he has indicated he’d sign a new contract mind, if he has, definitely keep him.
